Abstract: Apparatus for applying markings to substrates, particularly documents for authentication purposes, consists of a platen (90, 92) on which the substrate to be marked is located, means for feeding a transfer tape (44) to lie over the platen and a reciprocable heated die (34) adapted to press the transfer tape on to the substrate when it is lying on the platen with sufficient heat and pressure to transfer an image from the transfer tape to the substrate. The tape supply is mounted on a carriage (10, 11) which moves towards and away from the platen, first clamping the substrate against the platen, then bringing the transfer tape adjacent to the substrate and thereafter bringing the heated die into contact with the transfer tape, whereafter the sequence of operations is reversed in order to leave the document marked and unclamped. The apparatus is particularly useful for applying holographic images from tape on to documents such as cheques for authentication purposes.

Abstract: A dry film lubricant coat is applied by the transfer pad process to a piston (10) to lessen the stresses associated with reciprocating engine parts and method for applying such a coat to the skirt of a piston. Wetted dry film lubricants are diluted with volatile solvents to create a wetted dry film lubricant of liquid consistency in order to make the dry film lubricants adaptable to the transfer pad coating process. Application of the wetted dry film lubricant to the piston (10) by the transfer pad coating process provides for the precise and discriminant application of dry film lubricants to piston skirts (12a and 12b) thereby providing a less costly coated piston by avoiding the time-consuming task of masking the pistons prior to application of a wetted dry film lubricant by the currently used spray method and eliminating the waste and pollution problems associated with the spray method.

Abstract: A process for printing on to a 3 -dimensional article is described. An image is printed on to a first side of a stretchable carrier membrane having a first side and a second side. The membrane is mounted in a plane within a frame between a heating chamber defined on one side of the membrane, and an article receiving chamber defined on the other side of the membrane. A 3 -dimensional article to be printed is placed on to a generally flat platen positioned generally parallel to the said plane, optionally with a nest for the article thereon, within the article receiving chamber. A thermo- and vacuum- forming step is performed in which there is relative movement of the platen with respect to the membrane in a direction perpendicularly to the said plane to bring the article into register with the image printed on the membrane and to carry the article into intimate contact with the membrane through the said plane into the heating chamber. A source of vacuum is applied to the membrane from the said other side, and heat is applied to the membrane from the said one side at a first temperature sufficient to soften the membrane, whereby the membrane is thermo- and vacuum- wrapped at least partially about the article with the membrane in intimate contact with surface details of the article. A dye-diffusion step is performed in which infra-red radiation is applied to the article with the membrane wrapped therearound using at least two infra-red sources to heat the membrane and underlying surface of the article over substantially a half-spherical solid angle uniformly to a temperature in excess of the first temperature and for a time sufficient to cause the printed image to diffuse into the surface of the article but insufficient to damage the article.
