Next, the viewer device receives relevant interactive content (58) from a source (44) of interactive content, filtered and characterized for a specific user. This additional content is bound to the broadcast content only by nature of a relevancy mapping. As such, it may be presented to the user without the broadcast content providers direct assistance. The viewer device (16) merges the broadcast presentation (20) and the relevant interactive content (58) and displays both the broadcast presentation and the relevant interactive content on a viewer display (16). Preferably, the viewer device (16) accesses the source (44) of relevant interactive content over a computer network (40), such as the Internet.

On this platform, a mix of pre-scripted and live interactive dialog (chat with offered responses) are broadcast by a connected server or servers to provide supplemental entertainment, information regarding programmed content, enhancements to scheduled television advertising, a community experience, and an interface to Internet applications and services. The dialog provides a "Social Interface" allowing fictional and non-fictional characters to interact with viewers. The fictional and non-fictional characters are each emblematic of a specific affinity group categorization, which a user personally identifies with and is drawn to. Selection of an affinity character also provides a filter for selecting internet and broadcast content associated with that character. Second level content is also associated with and mediated by each character. This provide e commerce opportunities whereby sponsors can direct advertising content based upon factors such as the relative popularity of each character or the demographic group associated with each character.

In response to an incoming phone call, message, web page, or other communications information, the system pauses the video program and displays an indication of the occurrence of the communications, audio communications, or other event. In response to an outgoing communications such as a request for information or services, the system pauses the video program. The system also buffers the video programming while paused, permitting a user to replay missed portions of the video programming. Alternatively, the system waits for a triggering event, which includes the user's access to the audio communicants, communications, or other event, in order to pause the video program. The audio (voice) portion of a phone call or voice mail message is converted to text for display to a recipient of the call.

    摘要： A device for limiting the use of electronic appliances is disclosed. A timer is set inside an electronic appliance such as a television or personal computer. A three-stage conversion switch capable of selecting one of the continuous use of the electronic appliance, the use of the appliance for a period of time set by the timer, and suspension of the use of the appliance. In case of the selection of timer mode, the electronic appliance can be used only for a predetermined period of time set by the timer. During a period of time other than the set time, the electronic appliance may be continuously used or its operation is stopped according to a selected mode. A warning means warns that the end of the time set by the timer is approaching before the completion of the set time.
