Disclosed herein is an implantable accommodative IOL device for insertion into an eye of a patient, comprising an active region and a passive region. The active region has a first thickness and first refractive index, and the active region comprises an electrically responsive optical lens having variable optical power. The passive region is disposed at a periphery of the active region, and the passive region has a second thickness and a second refractive index. The second refractive index is different than the first refractive index. Thus, the light beams passing through the active and passive regions have a phase difference, thereby providing an extended depth of field.

A patient screening apparatus identifies candidates suitable for receiving accommodative implantable ophthalmic devices, such as dynamic intraocular lenses, based on pupil measurements under different viewing conditions. A pupillometer measures pupil size (pupil diameter or pupil area) and changes in pupil size as a function of ambient light level and/or object distance. For instance, the pupillometer may determine how much the pupil's size changes when the subject transitions from sustained viewing of a distant target to sustained viewing of a near target. These measurements may be used to determine variations in pupil response, including the standard deviation and/or median absolute deviation in pupil size under a given viewing condition, and ratios of pupil sizes and variances in pupil size. The apparatus uses these metrics to estimate whether a patient is likely to benefit from an accommodative implantable ophthalmic device. It can also use them to tune an implantable ophthalmic device.

An ophthalmic multifocal switchable lens includes a deformable element manifesting elevated strain with a formable surface of a multifocal surface shape to provide far and near vision. A transparent chamber is filled with optical matching fluid adjacent to the side of the deformable element opposite to the formable surface. The optical matching fluid has a refractive index that matches a refractive index of the deformable element material. A holding chamber is also filled with the optical matching fluid and connected with the transparent chamber with a means for preventing the optical fluid from being transported from the holding chamber to the transparent chamber which would reduce a strain of the deformable element. A split of light between far and near vision of the multifocal switchable lens changes upon a removal of the means to allow a flow of the optical matching fluid into the transparent chamber.

Embodiments of the invention relate to an intraocular lens system having a plurality of haptics for use with an optic. In general, the haptics are adapted to move independently in response to forces associated with a ciliary muscle and/or zonules of an eye when implanted. The optic may be releasably secured to the system using, for example, a plurality of optic securing arms. Alternatively, the optic may be fused to the haptics, which may project radially outward from the optic. A restraining arm may be included to limit movement of the haptics during accommodation and/or disaccommodation. Clamping members may be included for securing the system to a capsular bag of the eye. Methods of implanting the intraocular lens system into the eye are also described.
