A crude aromatic polycarboxylic acid is dispersed in an aqueous medium to prepare a slurry and the slurry is brought into contact with a metal catalyst in the absence of oxygen while preventing any catalyst component from coming into the crystals. Thus, a polymerization-inhibitory substance or a substance causative of coloration efficiently undergoes hydrogenation or decarbonylation at a low temperature while side reactions are kept being inhibited. Consequently, a directly polymerizable product can be efficiently obtained. Since a lower temperature can be used, apparatus simplification and energy saving are possible.
