A corrosion resistant, alkali resistant coating composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a binder comprising a reaction product of an epoxy-containing material and a phosphorus-containing material together with a curing agent. Aminoplasts, especially melamine-based aminoplasts, are particularly suitable curing agents. A source of silicon can optionally be included. The compositions also provide excellent adhesion and can be used with or without a weldable primer. The compositions are applied to and cured on a metal substrate.

A phosphorus-containing epoxy resin which is obtained by reacting an organophosphorus compound, a trifunctional epoxy resin, a bifunctional epoxy resin, and as an optional ingredient a bifunctional phenol compound; and a flame-retardant highly heat-resistant epoxy resin composition which contains the phosphorus-containing epoxy resin. By using the phosphorus-containing epoxy resin, a cured article excellent in flame retardancy and heat resistance is obtained. The resin is useful for producing prepregs or laminates.

A flame-retardant epoxy resin composition excellent in heat resistance and moist resistance. It is characterized in that it comprises (A) an epoxy resin, (B) a phosphazene compound, (C) an epoxy hardener, and (D) an inorganic filler, that the amounts of the ingredients (B) and (C) are 0.01 to 70 wt.% and 0 to 70 wt.%, respectively, based on the sum of the ingredients (A), (B), and (C) and the amount of the ingredient (D) is 0 to 95 wt.% based on the sum of the ingredients (A), (B), (C), and (D), and that the ingredient (B) is at least one member selected from the group consisting of (1) a cyclic and/or chain phosphazene compound having a specific structure, (2) a polymer of the cyclic and/or chain phosphazene compound, and (3) a product of the reaction of the cyclic and/or chain phosphazene compound with at least one compound selected among epoxy compounds, phenol compounds, amine compounds, and acid anhydrides.

A novel epoxy resin having reduced flammability is presented. Phosphonic acid esters in an amount of from 0.2 to 5 percent phosphorous in epoxy resin are employed. Electrical laminate circuit boards having reduced flammability may be made from these compositions.
