This invention relates to compositions for improving fuel efficiency in internal combustion engines. The composition comprises a lubricant having an oil of lubricating viscosity and (A) a compound represented by the formula wherein in Formula (A-I), R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrocarbyl groups, X 1 and X 2 are independently O or S, and n is zero to 3; and (B) an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having a substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (C) a second phosphorus compound other than (A), said second phosphorus compound being a phosphorus acid, phosphorus acid ester, phosphorus acid salt, or derivative thereof. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (D) an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulfur acid, carboxylic acid or phenol. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (E) a thiocarbamate. These compositions are useful in providing lubricating compositions and fractional fluids with enhanced fuel efficiency properties.

A compressor (1) draws in gaseous refrigerant optionally containing liquid refrigerant and discharges high-pressure gaseous refrigerant. A condenser (2) is downstream of the compressor (1) condenses the high-pressure gaseous refrigerant. A throttle mechanism (3) downstream of the condenser (2) reduces the pressure of liquid refrigerant, optionally containing gaseous refrigerant, leaving the condenser (2). An evaporator (4) downstream of the throttle mechanism (3) vaporizes the liquid refrigerant or gas-liquid phase refrigerant leaving the throttle mechanism (3), the vaporized refrigerant constituting the gaseous refrigerant, optionally containing liquid refrigerant, which is drawn into the compressor (1). A refrigerating oil (6) is contained in the compressor (1) or a separate tank, at least part of the refrigerating oil being exposed to the refrigerant for performing the function of lubrication or sealing. The refrigerant is a mixture of refrigerants at least one of which is inflammable. The refrigerating oil is lighter than the liquid refrigerant and dissolves only slightly in it.

Methods of preparing such aqueous release aid compositions and methods of imparting release characteristics to various release surfaces and various viscous masses using the aqueous release aid compositions of the invention are also disclosed.

A lubricant and surface conditioner for formed metal surfaces, particularly beverage containers, reduces the coefficient of static friction of said metal surfaces and enables drying said metal surfaces at a lower temperature. An aqueous composition for forming the conditioner by contact with metal surfaces includes a water-soluble organic material selected from a phosphate ester, alcohol, fatty acid including mono-, di-, tri-, and polyacids; fatty acid derivatives such as salts, hydroxy acids, amides, esters, ethers and derivatives thereof; and mixtures thereof and at least one of the elements selected from zirconium, titanium, cerium, aluminum, iron, tin, vanadium, tantalum, niobium, molybdenum, tungsten, and hafnium in metallic or ionic form. In order to avoid formation of sludge in the aqueous lubricant and surface conditioner forming composition, the composition should contain as little as possible of materials containing phenanthrene rings, such as conventional surfactants made by ethoxylating rosin. In order to assure the minimization of such surfactants in the aqueous lubricant and surface conditioner forming composition, surfactants containing phenanthrene rings should also be avoided or minimized in earlier cleaning stages.

At least one exterior surface of the can, prior to the last drying of the surface before automatic conveying, is contacted with a lubricant and surface conditioner forming composition comprising ethoxylated, hydrogenated castor oil triglycerides, and the can is then dried without subsequent rinsing, thereby forming a film on the can to provide the surface of the can after drying with a reduced coefficient of static friction compared to an otherwise identical sequence of treatments where the lubricant and surface conditioner forming composition is substituted with water.
