Embodiments described herein relate to assay methods and kits for detecting resistance of any enzyme to its inhibitor due to functional alteration of the enzyme, comprising, conducting two or more reactions with two or more reagent mixes optionally containing substrates for the enzyme. The mixes are substantially similar, except that one contains no enzyme inhibitor whereas the others contain an enzyme inhibitor being tested for resistance. The ratio of the signal from the reaction with an inhibitor to that from a reaction without an inhibitor is used to indicate whether the enzyme is resistant to the enzyme inhibitor and also determine the susceptibility or resistance of the enzyme to various inhibitors and further identify enzyme variants. Embodiments further relate to assay methods comprising only two reactions- one conducted in a mix containing the inhibitor and the other without the inhibitor. Further included are devices for conducting such assays.

Systems and methods for detecting and/or identifying target cells (e.g., bacteria) using engineered transduction particles are described herein. In some embodiments, a method includes mixing a quantity of transduction particles within a sample. The transduction particles are associated with a target cell. The transduction particles are non-replicative, and are engineered to include a nucleic acid molecule formulated to cause the target cell to produce a series of reporter molecules. The sample and the transduction particles are maintained to express the series of the reporter molecules when target cell is present in the sample. A signal associated with a quantity of the reporter molecules is received. In some embodiments, a magnitude of the signal is independent from a quantity of the transduction particle above a predetermined quantity.

The present invention integrates a structured light source into an imaging system for reconstructing surface topography of an object being imaged. The structured light source includes a mechanism for transmitting a set of lines onto the object from an angle. The lines are displaced, or phase shifted relative to a stage, when they encounter an object with finite height, such as a mouse. This phase shift provides structured light information for the object. A camera captures the structured light information. Using software that employs a structured light analysis, surface topography data for the object is determined from the phase shift of the lines.

The invention relates to a method for detecting and/or identifying, in a biological sample, bacteria having a resistance to carbapenems. The method comprises the following steps consisting in: a) bringing the sample into contact with a reaction medium containing at least one chromogenic agent and faropenem and/or doripenem; b) incubating the sample and reaction medium brought into contact in step (a), such as to allow the growth of bacteria; and c) detecting the strains having a resistance to carbapenems. The medium used in step (a) also contains cloxacillin and/or a combination of cloxacillin and PAbetaN.
