Alumina hydrate particles having a composition represented by the general formula xM2O.y(NH4)2O.Al2O3.zH2O (2×10−4≦x≦25×10−4, 0.1×10−4≦y≦20×10−4, 0.6≦z≦2.5, M represents an alkali metal; when the alkali metal is in the form of M2O, x is the number of moles thereof per mol of Al2O3; when ammonia is in the form of (NH4)2O, y is the number of moles thereof per mol of Al2O3; and z is the number of moles of hydration water (H2O) per mol of Al2O3), the alumina hydrate particles having an average particle diameter of 0.02 to 0.2 μm, a total pore volume of 0.5 to 1.5 ml/g, and a volume of pores whose diameter is from 15 to 30 nm ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 ml/g.

A thermoplastic resin film excellent in slipperiness, wear resistance and transparency. The film contains 0.005 to 20 wt. % of specified fine particles of composite oxide comprising silica and at least one inorganic oxide other than silica. The film is preferably a polyester film having a hazing value of 5 % or less. It is suitable for use as magnetic tape, capacitor, photographic film and pressure-sensitive adhesive tape. The film is manufactured by adding a silicate of alkali metals, ammonium or organic bases and an alkali-soluble inorganic compound simultaneously to an alkali solution with pH 9 or above, generating fine particles of composite oxide without any control of the pH of this reaction solution, adding the obtaind sol to a thermoplastic resin and/or the reaction system thereof, and processing of a film.

A thermoplastic resin film excellent in slipperiness, wear resistance and transparency contains 0.05 to 0.5 wt. % of specified fine particles of composite oxide comprising silica, alkali metal oxide, and at least one inorganic oxide other than silica, wherein the fine particles satisfies the following expression (I):S .gtoreq.10,000/(Dp*SG) (I)wherein S indicates the specific surface area (m.sup.2 /g) of the fine particles of composite oxide, Dp indicates the average diameter (nm) of the fine particles, and SG indicates the true specific gravity thereof. The titanium-containing silica sol of the invention includes (a) the following fine particles (a1) or the following fine particles (a2) and (b) a dispersion medium: (a1) titania fine particles having a mean particle diameter of 2 to 50 nm and porous silica fine particles having a mean particle diameter of 5 to 100 nm and a specific surface area, as determined by BET method, of not less than 300 m2/g, or (a2) porous silica fine particles obtained by surface-modifying surfaces of porous silica fine particles having a mean particle diameter of 5 to 100 nm and a specific surface area, as determined by BET method, of not less than 300 m2/g with a titanate compound.

In a process for preparing spherical particles of hydroxide having a particle diameter of from 0.1 to 10 .mu.m by adding a corresponding metal alkoxide to a dispersion of water-alcohol system having dispersed therein a metal oxide or hydroxide as a seed, under alkaline conditions and allowing a decomposition product from said metal alkoxide to attach onto said seed to effect particle growth of the seed, the improvement which comprises maintaining said dispersion at a substantially constant pH within the range between 10 and 13 during the addition of the metal alkoxide to said dispersion and the subsequent particle growth of the seed, thereby to prepare mono-dispersed particles substantially free from particle aggregation having a sharp particle size distribution of a standard deviation of not greater than 0.5. The white particles so prepared may be, after separation, heat treated to provide black particles. The white or black particles may be coated with a synthetic resin in the surface. The products are useful particularly as spacers for liquid crystal display devices.

The invention provides a recording sheet having an ink-receiving layer, which comprises a substrate sheet and an ink-receiving layer formed thereon, said ink-receiving layer comprising oxide particles, wherein the ink-receiving layer has pores having a diameter in the range of 3.4 to 2,000 nm, the pore volume of pores having a diameter of 3.4 to 30 nm is in the range of 0.2 to 1.8 ml/g, and the pore volume of pores having a diameter of 30 to 2,000 nm is in the range of 0.1 to 1.5 ml/g. It is preferable that the oxide particles have an average particle diameter of 2 to 1,000 nm and are a mixture of hydrophobic oxide particles and hydrophilic oxide particles. This recording sheet shows sufficient strength, has excellent printability such that images of uniform density and high sharpness can be printed thereon without bleeding, and is excellent in water resistance, weathering resistance and fading resistance.
