One of the methods includes obtaining first optical measurements of RCA particles as the RCA particles are conveyed past the first optical sensors; determining, based on the first measurements, an initial characterization of the RCA particles; iteratively performing a carbonation process on the RCA particles, obtaining second optical measurements of the RCA particles, and determining, from the second measurements, a second characterization of the RCA particles, wherein conditions of the carbonation process are initially set based on the initial characterization, and the conditions of the carbonation process are adjusted based on the second characterization; ceasing the iterative performance of the carbonation process in response to the second characterization meeting target carbonation characteristics; iteratively performing a densification process on the RCA particles, obtaining third optical measurements of the RCA particles, and determining, from the third measurements, a third characterization of the RCA particles, wherein conditions of the densification process are initially set based on the initial characterization or the second characterization, and the conditions of the densification process are adjusted based on the third characterization; and ceasing the iterative performance of the densification process in response to the third characterization meeting target densification characteristics.

A method of manufacturing inorganic binder by reduction furnace slag includes a raw material preparation step, a stirring step, a maintaining step and a drying step. The raw material preparation step is to provide a powder mixture containing 30 wt % to 55 wt % of reduction furnace slag, and 45 wt % to 70 wt % of glass powder. The stirring step is to place the powder mixture in a mixing tank, and add an alkali activator to the mixing tank to stir and react to form mixed slurry. The alkali equivalent (AE) of the mixed slurry is 2% to 7%, and the water-binder ratio is 0.25 to 0.4. The maintaining step is to place the mixed slurry in a high-temperature and high pressure maintaining environment for a maintaining time to get a binder. The drying step is to dry the binder.

A method of controlling the setting time of a geopolymer by coating aluminosilicate particles with nanoparticles to slow the geopolymerization reaction. The coating effectiveness of the nanoparticles may be enhanced by pretreating the aluminosilicate particles with a layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolytes. A geopolymer is formed by mixing about 39% to about 66% by weight aluminosilicate source, about 0% to about 40% by weight sand, about 19% to about 33% by weight of alkali activator solution, and about 1% to about 4% nanoparticles.

The invention provides novel granite-like composite materials and methods for preparation thereof. The granite-like composite materials can be readily produced from widely available, low cost precursor materials by a process suitable for large-scale production. The precursor materials include calcium silicate, for example, wollastonite, and particulate filler materials which comprise silicon dioxide-rich materials such as quartz, mica, feldspar, sand and glass. Additives can include calcium carbonate-rich and magnesium carbonate-rich materials. Various additives can be used to fine-tune the physical appearance and mechanical properties of the composite material, such as colorants such as particles of colored materials, such as colored glass, colored sand, and colored quartz particles, and pigments (e.g., black iron oxide, cobalt oxide and chromium oxide). These granite-like composite materials exhibit visual patterns unique to granite as well as display compressive strength, flexural strength and water absorption similar to that of granite.

An additive for Portland-cement slurries comprises a liquid silicate absorbed into a solid porous medium. The additive is incorporated in slurries designed for well-cementing applications. The liquid silicate functions as a retarder aid and dispersant when added to slurries for use at temperatures above about 85° C. The resulting solid product allows use of the liquid silicate in well-cementing operations as if it were a dry additive.
