What are described are polyvinyl ester dispersions which are prepared in a multistage process and have a low content of polymerized acids or acid anhydrides. They can be obtained by a multistage process in which a polyvinyl ester dispersion is obtained in a first stage, monomers in dissolved or pure form are added to the reaction mixture in a second stage and then the polymerization is started again. The polymer dispersions obtained in this way are notable for a low coagulum content and for increased tensile strengths of the films formed therefrom.

As a characteristic that had not been known conventionally at all, “permeability potential under pressure (PPUP)” of a particulate water absorbing agent is regulated, and further, “range of particle size distribution” and “coloring” are concomitantly regulated. The present invention is directed to a particulate water absorbing agent having the following (a) to (c): (a) permeability potential under pressure (PPUP) being 50 to 100%; (b) yellowness index (YI) being 0 to 10, and rate of change of yellowness index (ΔYI) being 100 to 150% following a coloring acceleration test for 14 days at 70±1° C. and the relative humidity of 95±1%; and (c) particles of smaller than 150 μm specified by standard sieve classification accounting for 0 to 5% by weight, weight average particle diameter (D50) being 200 to 550 μm, and logarithmic standard deviation (σζ) of particle size distribution being 0.20 to 0.40.

A process for the preparation of graft polymers from ethylene homopolymers or copolymers and olefinically unsaturated monomers, especially from ethylene/vinyl ester copolymers, in the presence of a radical forming agent in homogenous or heterogeneous phase, in which a mixture of (meth)acrylonitrile, at least one aromatic vinyl compound and vinylchloride are polymerized in the presence of an ethylene homopolymer or copolymer. The products obtained contain no ungrafted styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer and more than 80% by weight of the graft polymer is chemically almost uniform in structure. The products obtained according to the invention are eminently suitable for use as coating materials and as materials which can be thermoplastically processed.

Emulsion copolymers having a core-shell structure with alkyl alkanoate, alkylene, alkyl acrylate and vinyl silane in the core and vinyl alkanoate in the shell are usable in pigmented surface coating compositions. These compositions have desired water permeability tensile strength and elongation properties at low temperatures. The compositions provide bridging for cracks present or developing in the surface.
