A cordless cautery and cutting surgical device includes a modular battery and a surgical handle. The battery has a cordless radio-frequency-signal-generation assembly generating an output radio-frequency signal and a first selectively removable connector part. The surgical handle has a first handle body portion with a bipolar cautery and cutting end effector. The end effector has jaws with bipolar contacts and a cutting blade disposed between the jaws. The handle has a second body portion connected to the first body portion, defines therein an aseptically sealable battery-holding compartment selectively exposed to the environment and removably holding therein the battery, and a second selectively removable connector part operable to removably hold the first connector part thereto. The second connector part has conductors electrically connecting the RF assembly to the bipolar contacts for supplying the radio-frequency signal to the bipolar contacts when the first and second connector parts are removably secured together.

An endoscopic bipolar cautery biopsy forceps device has a conduit, a pair of articulable opposed jaws, two conductive pull wires, and an actuator. The articulable opposed jaws are located at the distal end of the conduit. Each jaw is provided with a cutting surface at its distal end and a tang at its proximal end. At least a portion of the cutting surface is electrically conductive and a portion of the tang is electrically conductive and electrically coupled to the conductive cutting surface. The remainder of the jaw is preferably non-conductive or is coated with an insulator. The conductive pull wire is coupled to the conductive portion of the tang of each jaw and is insulated as it extends through the conduit to a handle portion which includes the actuator. The actuator is coupled to the proximal ends of the pull wires so that movement of the actuator pulls the pull wires and articulates the jaws. The actuator is also provided with an electrical coupling device which electrically couples to the proximal ends of the pull wires and permits easy connection to an electrical cautery source.

At least one pull wire extends through the conduit and is coupled to the jaws so that movement of the pull wire(s) through the conduit causes the jaws to open and close. The proximal end of the pull wire(s) is provided with a mating tip and the proximal end of the conduit is provided with a mating sleeve. The handle portion includes a shaft and a spool. The conduit is detachably attached to the shaft, while the pull wire(s) is detachably attached to the spool. Attachment is effected by spring biased coupling devices which engage the mating tip of the pull wire(s) and the mating sleeve of the conduit.

Remote control actuators for endoscopic tools are provided. Each remote control actuator includes a driver, a coupler which couple the endoscopic tool to the driver, a power source which power the driver, and a controller coupled to the power source and/or the driver for controlling the power applied to the driver. In conjunction with the controller, a user interface is preferably provided for user control of the remote control actuator which actuates the endoscopic tool. In addition, a sensing/feedback mechanism is preferably provided between the driver and the endoscopic tool and is coupled to the controller and/or the power source. The sensing/feedback mechanism senses the amount of tension or compression on the pull wire(s) of the endoscopic tool and provides a related signal to the controller so that the force applied to the endoscopic tool may be regulated. Various types of power sources are disclosed including electric, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic. Various types of drivers are disclosed, including a motor/linear actuator, a hydraulic or pneumatic piston, and a motor with or without reduction gears coupled to a pulley and belt or a sprocket and chain or a rack and pinion. In addition, several couplers, controllers, user interfaces, and sensing/feedback mechanisms are disclosed.

A hollow stretch valve is coaxially disposed in the drainage lumen, has a fixed portion within the drainage lumen just proximal of an increased stretching portion, and prevents fluid from passing through the drainage port in a steady state. The stretch valve has a sliding portion slidably disposed within the drainage lumen such that, in a stretched state when the proximal catheter end is stretched, the sliding portion slides within the drainage lumen to permit fluid to pass through the balloon drainage port and/or inner wall of the catheter.

A method for variably flexing an insertion device for receiving an instrument, includes providing a hollow body having inner and outer sleeves defining a space therebetween in which tendons are disposed. Suction is applied to create a vacuum in the space for frictionally locking the tendons in place between the sleeves in a relatively stiff condition of the hollow body. The vacuum is relieved to release the tendons in a relatively flexible condition of the hollow body.
