A vehicle drive power control apparatus and method control the speed ratio of a transmission based on a speed shift line that is set so that, within a practical region, the speed shift line is in a low revolution speed side of an optimal fuel consumption line determined based on the efficiency of the engine and the efficiency of the transmission. Therefore, the width of increase in revolution speed from the speed occurring at the beginning of the practical region is curbed. Hence, the fuel consumption resulting from inertia torques caused by fluctuations in engine revolution speed, that is, fluctuations in the revolution speed of the input shaft of the transmission and a fluidic power transfer mechanism, is reduced, so that the efficiency as a whole increases and the fuel economy improves in comparison with the case where the optimal fuel consumption line is used as a control basis.

An apparatus for detecting a concentration of a vapor fuel in a lean-burn internal combustion engine includes a module for performing purge concentration learning when in a lean-burn where an air/fuel ratio sensor does not sufficiently work. When detecting the concentration of the vapor fuel during a lean-burn operation of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine is switched over to a homogeneous combustion operation from a lean-burn operation, and the concentration of the vapor fuel is detected under the homogeneous combustion operation. Alternatively, the combustion is switched over to the homogeneous combustion when in a rich spike and when ensuring a brake negative pressure, and hence the concentration of the vapor fuel is detected by utilizing this timing. The thus detected and learned concentration of the vapor fuel is utilized for the purge control when in the lean-burn.

An apparatus for reducing a torque fluctuation of a lean burn combustion engine. An injector supplies fuel to combustion chambers of the engine. An ignitor ignites the fuel supplied into the combustion chambers. A knock sensor detects knocking in the engine. An electronic control unit (ECU) computes a delay amount of the ignition timing based on a result of knock detection by the knock sensor and controls the ignitor to delay the ignition timing by the delay amount to suppress knocking. The ECU also detects torque fluctuation of the engine. The ECU increases an amount of fuel injection from the injector by an increase amount to reduce the torque fluctuation when the detected torque fluctuation is larger than a target value. The ECU limits the increase amount when the ignition timing is delayed by more than a predetermined delay amount.

A computer computes a target opening angle of the swirl control valve in response to the detected operating conditions. A controller controls the force of the swirl by controlling the actuator in accordance with the computed target opening angle. A detector detects fluctuation of engine rotation. A corrector corrects the target opening angle in response to the detected fluctuation of the engine rotation to improve the performance of the engine.

An improved apparatus and method for controlling fuel injection in an internal combustion engine. An EGR passage is connected to an intake duct for supplying exhaust gas, which has been discharged from a combustion chamber, to the intake duct. An EGR valve is located in the EGR passage to adjust the flow rate of the exhaust gas supplied to the intake duct from the EGR passage. An acceleration pedal adjusts the flow rate of the air supplied to the combustion chamber. An ECU computes the amount of fuel to be injected from a fuel injection valve based on the depression degree of the acceleration pedal and the engine speed when the exhaust gas is supplied to the intake duct from the EGR passage. The ECU computes the amount of fuel to be injected from the fuel injection valve based on the intake pressure and the engine speed when the exhaust gas is not supplied to the intake duct from the EGR passage. The ECU controls the fuel injection valve based on the computed fuel injection amount. This prevents intake air fluctuations caused by exhaust gas recirculation from affecting the computed fuel injection amount.
