Abstract: The present invention relates to an image analysis method for providing information for supporting illness development prediction regarding a neoplasm in a human or animal body. The method includes receiving for the neoplasm first and second image data at a first and second moment in time, and deriving for a plurality of image features a first and a second image feature parameter value from the first and second image data. These feature parameter values being a quantitative representation of a respective image feature. Further, calculating an image feature difference value by calculating a difference between the first and second image feature parameter value, and based on a prediction model deriving a predictive value associated with the neoplasm for supporting treatment thereof. The prediction model includes a plurality of multiplier values associated with image features. For calculating the predictive value the method includes multiplying each image feature difference value with its associated multiplier value and combining the multiplied image feature difference values.

Abstract: Viscoelastic characteristics in a subject are imaged by a simple method. A viscoelasticity measurement reference layer whose elastic modulus and viscosity coefficient are known is included between an ultrasonic wave transmitting/receiving probe and the subject and distributions of elastic modulus and viscosity coefficient inside the subject are calculated from a change over time of strain generated in the viscoelasticity measurement reference layer and the subject according to a pressure applied to the subject which changes over time and known elastic modulus and viscosity coefficient of the viscoelasticity measurement reference layer.

Abstract: A visual-assisted insertion device for ensuring accurate and repeatable needle insertion into the human body regardless of skill or training. A user of the visual-assisted insertion device may accurately perform inter-organ needle insertion by determining a desired needle-insertion point on an ultrasound display screen, wherein the insertion point and angle of the needle is automatically calculated and mechanically adjusted to correspond to the desired needle-insertion point. Accordingly, unsuccessful inter-organ needle insertion is minimized through a handheld, visual-assisted insertion device which simplifies the inter-organ needle insertion process.

Abstract: A method for estimating a thickness of tissue includes receiving multiple measurements, each measurement indicating (i) a respective mechanical pressure applied to the tissue, and (ii) one or more round-trip propagation times of an ultrasound wave traversing the tissue in the presence of the respective mechanical pressure. A set of the measurements is selected, having mechanical pressures that fall in a specified partial subrange of mechanical-pressure values. The thickness of the tissue is estimated based on the round-trip propagation times in the selected set of the measurements.

Abstract: A method of directing energy to tissue includes the initial steps of determining target tissue location and/or target tissue margins, positioning an ablation device for delivery of energy to target tissue, and introducing a material having a shape into a tissue region to be monitored. The material is adapted to change echogenic properties in response to heat. The method also includes the steps of applying energy to the ablation device, monitoring the material on a monitor, determining an echogenic response of the material, and terminating ablation if it is determined that the echogenic response of the material is outside a predetermined target tissue threshold.

Abstract: A system for thermal treatment or ablation of tissue includes an ultrasonic thermal ablation probe, an ultrasonic three-dimensional imaging probe that captures an image from radio frequency image data obtained before the radio frequency image data is processed, a control system for multi-axis control of the imaging probe's position, and an ultrasonic feedback mechanism that measures ultrasound echo strain to estimate heat-induced structural changes of an area surrounding the ultrasonic thermal ablation probe, from the image. The ultrasonic thermal ablation probe is either an interstitial ablator inserted into tissue, a natural cavity or a vessel to emit high intensity ultrasound energy to deposit thermal dose, or an external applicator that emits a directional high intensity ultrasound energy to deposit thermal dose via surface contact with tissue. The control system adjusts power levels of the ultrasonic thermal ablation probe based on the estimated heat-induced structural changes.
