Abstract: There are provided headphones and a speaker unit having proper acoustic properties and exhibiting excellent reproduced sound quality even in the case of providing air holes at a damping member. The headphones include a speaker unit having a diaphragm and a frame supporting an outer peripheral portion of the diaphragm, a housing configured to house the speaker unit, and a damping member made of a material exhibiting air permeability and attached to cover an opening of the frame through which a sound wave emitted from the diaphragm passes and/or an opening of the housing. The damping member has one or more air holes formed by removal of the material forming the damping member. A secondary damping member is attached to an annular edge portion defining each air hole, thereby reducing vibration of the edge portion.

Abstract: An electronic device such as a pair of headphones may be provided with ear cups having speakers for playing audio to a user. Capacitive proximity sensor electrodes having acoustic openings may overlap the speakers. The capacitive proximity sensor electrodes may include electrodes that are arranged in a ring. Control circuitry in the electronic device may use the capacitive proximity sensor electrodes to measure ear patterns of a user when the headphones are being worn on the head of the user. The control circuitry may include switching circuitry that allows the electrodes to be dynamically combined to form electrodes of enlarged area to enhance detection range or to form separate electrodes to enhance spatial resolution.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described herein that provide a vibratory device that can apply a vibratory signal to a portion of a head of a user such that the vibratory signal can be conducted via bone to a vestibular system of the user and cause a portion of the vestibular system to move in a manner equivalent to that of a therapeutically effective vibratory signal applied to an area overlaying a mastoid bone of the user. The vibratory device can be associated with frequencies less than 200 Hz. The vibratory device can be effective at treating a physiological condition associated with the vestibular system.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses are disclosed for generating a spatial audio format. An input audio source may include one or more individual channels. The one or more individual channels may be designated to be played by a corresponding one or more speakers. The one or more individual channels of the audio source may be separated. The one or more individual tracks may be input into a modeling space representing a multi-dimensional space. The modeling space may include a plurality of emitters at various locations in a vector space. Each of the one or more individual channels may be panned to one or more of the plurality of emitters. The panning may be based on a normalized proximity of the one or more individual channels in the modeling space to the plurality of emitters. The one or more of the plurality of emitters may be encoded into a single multichannel file.

Abstract: A method of stereophonic recording is provided. A first audio signal is detected by a microphone in a first housing of an earphone detecting an environmental sound outside the first housing. A second audio signal is detected by a microphone in the second housing to detect environmental sound outside the second housing. The detected first and second audio signals are forwarded to an external device for further processing and recording via an output unit of the earphone unit. The first and second audio signals are processed and forwarded to the first and second electro-acoustic transducers in the first and second housing of the earphone respectively. The processed first and second audio signals are reproduced by the first and second electro-acoustic transducers respectively to implement a talk-through function.

Abstract: A method of operating a hearing assistance system that includes a binaural hearing device with first and second earpieces, each earpiece adapted to be worn over, on or in one ear. Each earpiece has an electroacoustic transducer that converts an input electrical audio signal for the ear into sound, and at least one microphone that converts sound into an electrical microphone output signal. The hearing assistance system is adapted to process microphone output signals from both earpieces to create the electrical audio signals that are used to drive the transducers of both earpieces. A situation in which one of the earpieces is not over, on or in an ear is detected, and in response the processing of at least one of the microphone output signals that creates the audio signals is modified.

Abstract: A signal processing device includes a noise analysis unit for analyzing a frequency component of a noise signal obtained by converting a collected sound into an electrical signal, a plurality of filtering units for carrying out predetermined filtering operations on the noise signal on the basis of an analysis result, and an output control unit for temporally varying a synthesis rate of outputs of the plurality of filtering units according to a change in the analysis result of the noise analysis unit. When the analysis result of the noise analysis unit changes, one filtering unit starts a predetermined filtering operation by characteristics different from those of other filtering units that carry out predetermined filtering operations on the noise signal according to the change in the analysis result of the noise analysis unit.

Abstract: A virtual reality (VR) system simulates sounds that a user of the VR system perceives to have originated from sources at desired virtual locations of the VR system. The simulated sounds are generated based on personalized head-related transfer functions (HRTF) of the user that are constructed by applying machine-learned models to a set of anatomical features identified for the user. The set of anatomical features may be identified from images of the user captured by a camera. In one instance, the HRTF is represented as a reduced set of parameters that allow the machine-learned models to capture the variability in HRTF across individual users while being trained in a computationally-efficient manner.
