The concentrator has a separation chamber which contains one or more relatively stationary filter elements and a rotor with at least one radial element of solid or hollow construction which extends substantially parallel with respect to an adjacent stationary filter element, and defines therebetween at least part of the flow path of a solids-containing fluid to be processed. Each radial element has one or more vanes projecting towards but spaced a predetermined distance from the filtering surface of an adjacent filter element. The radial elements and their vanes provide a means of positively controlling the initial build-up and maintenance during operation of the concentrator of dense, porous and generally friable filter cake layers over the filtering surfaces. The filter cake layers are formed autogenously from the solids-containing fluid being processed and remain on filtering surfaces of the filter elements throughout the period of processing of the solids-containing fluid in the concentrator. In one capability or operational attribute the filter cake layers serve as filtering media. In other capabilities the filter cake layers provide protection for the filtering surfaces during operation of the concentrator; make possible high rotational speeds of the rotor during operation of the concentrator, and permit the use of high fluid pressures within the separation chamber.

A filter apparatus comprises a filter element inside a stationary housing. In one embodiment, an inlet manifold extends helically along the outside of the housing. A director blade within the housing causes the unfiltered liquid from the inlet manifold to strike the filter element tangentially in a direction opposing filter element rotation. The filtered liquid passing through the filter element is withdrawn from the interior of the filter element. A stationary vane or deflector inside the filter element parallels the director blade and inlet manifold and forces some filtered liquid radially outwardly through the filter element, at the point where the inward flow impinges on the filter element, for loosening contaminant from the outside of the filter element. Adjacent this point a gathering blade extends inward from the housing toward the filter element in parallelism with the inlet manifold to intercept the rotational flow and loosened contaminant adjacent the outside of the filter element and direct same radially outwardly into a drain chamber, creating a vortex flow therein. The drain chamber is oriented and contoured to cause vortex flow downwardly to direct contaminant particles to a drain. In another embodiment, the helical inlet manifold is omitted and the filter liquid is merely introduced into the housing externally of the filter element by a suitable conduit. In a further embodiment, the guide vane or deflector inside the filter element is omitted and a backwash liquid supply tube is provided within the filter element opposite the gathering blade and has outlet openings facing the filter element wall for direction of backwash liquid flow outwardly through the filter element to force contaminant particles from the exterior of the filter element.

A method and apparatus for filtering liquid wherein contaminated liquid is delivered selectively to first and second filter tanks having filter media disposed therein. The contaminated liquid, filtered through one of the filter tanks, is delivered to a backwash storage tank where a predetermined volume of filtered liquid is maintained. When the filter in the first tank becomes partially clogged with solid particles removed from the contaminated liquid, flow of contaminated liquid is diverted to a second filter tank and liquid which has been filtered is pumped from the backwash storage tank through the first filter for cleaning. An automatic control system is provided for automatic switching of flow between the first and second filter tanks and for controlling the backwash cycle.

Methods and systems are provided for recovering an organic solvent from a waste sludge generated during formation of a polyarylene sulfide. Methods include combining the waste sludge with a liquid extractant that extracts the organic solvent into a homogeneous liquid phase. Upon a temperature change, the homogeneous liquid phase can separate into an organic solvent-rich liquid phase and a liquid extractant-rich liquid phase. The two liquid phases can be separated and further processed if desired to further purify the recovered organic solvent. Methods can also include forming the polyarylene sulfide by a polymerization process and thereafter purifying a slurry of the polyarylene sulfide. A liquid washing product is formed as a result of the purification process, which can be subjected to a distillation process that forms an organic solvent-rich stream and the waste sludge.
