Stannic chloride is partially hydrolyzed, admixed with an alumina sol, and the mixture gelled to form a tin-containing alumina suitable for use as a catalyst or as a catalyst support or carrier material. The method is particularly useful in the manufacture of a reforming catalyst comprising a platinum component impregnated on an alumina carrier material comprising up to about 30 wt. percent tin as stannic oxide.
