Abstract: A fixed-cutter earth-boring tool includes a first blade substantially comprising a first material having a first elastic modulus at a temperature, and a second blade substantially comprising a second material having a second elastic modulus at the temperature. The second elastic modulus is different from the first elastic modulus. A method of forming an earth-boring tool includes forming a bit body having a plurality of blades, and providing at least one cutting element on at least one of the plurality of blades. Some fixed-cutter earth-boring drill bits include a first blade exhibiting a first deflection when subjected to a load, and a second blade exhibiting a second deflection when subjected to the load. The first deflection may be a continuous function of the load, and the second deflection may be a discontinuous function of the load.

Abstract: Methods of designing an earth-boring tool are described, including calculating one or more performance parameters of the tool based on drilling conditions, a plurality of depth of cut values, and a set of values of other design variables. Methods of enhancing a performance parameter in the design of an earth-boring tool are also described, including calculating the performance parameter based at least partially on a plurality of depth of cut values and a first set of values of other design variables, calculating the performance parameter based at least partially on a second set of values of the other design variables different than the first set, and comparing the calculated performance parameters to determine which of the first and the second set is closer to a target range or value across a range of the plurality of depths of cut. Related methods of forming an earth-boring tool are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods for investigating a subsurface volume of interest from a borehole. Apparatus comprise an enclosure configured for conveyance along the borehole; an acoustic source in the enclosure configured to generate acoustic signals; a lens assembly disposed in the enclosure and next to the acoustic source, the lens assembly being formed of a plurality of lens elements; wherein each lens element comprises a plurality of cells arranged in a curvilinear cell array, each cell formed as a column oriented transverse to a direction of travel of the acoustical signals. The plurality of cells may be arranged according to a conformal mapping geometry, including a canonical Bipolar conformal mapping transformation of constant [u,v] contour lines to [x,y] Cartesian coordinates. A portion of the cells are scaled down in size by a scale factor. The scale factor corresponding to each cell of the portion varies non-monotonically along periodicity lines.

Abstract: A device, system, and method for locating collars along a casing string. The device includes a casing collar locator (CCL) and a valve in communication with the CCL connected to a work string. Fluid is pumped down the work string as the device is used to locate collars along a string. Upon detection of a collar, the CCL sends a signal to the valve, which causes the actuation of the valve to decreases a flow area within a work string. The decrease in flow area causes a pressure increase within the work string, which may be detected at the surface to indicate the detection of a collar. The device may include an amplifier and power source to amplify the signal from the CCL to the valve. The CCL may detect collars by a change in magnetic flux or by the detection of a signal emitted by individual collars.

Abstract: Wall openings in a mandrel of a liner hanger/packer are eliminated and setting is accomplished with pressure against a landed object in a running tool. The wall of the running tool leads to a sealed annular space with a movable seal attached to a setting sleeve and the other end is a packer cup supported by the running tool. The setting sleeve sequentially sets the slips and releases the running tool followed by setting the packer seal. Optionally a dog sub can be used to set with set down weight on the setting sleeve. The set positions are locked in. The slips can be alternatively set with release of a contained spring force. The setting sleeve seal can be sheared out to allow removal of the running tool.

Abstract: A well treatment fluid contains a surface modifying treatment agent having an anchor and a hydrophobic tail. The surface modifying treatment agent is an organophosphorus acid derivative. After the well treatment fluid is pumped into a well penetrating the subterranean formation, the anchor binds to the surface of the formation. The subterranean formation is a siliceous formation or a metal oxide-containing subterranean formation. The anchor bonds to a Si atom when the formation is a siliceous formation and to the metal of the metal oxide when the formation is a metal oxide-containing formation. After being bound to the surface of the formation, frictional drag within the well is reduced. This allows for faster recovery of formation fluids. The bonding of the surface modifying treatment agent onto the formation may further be enhanced by first pre-treating the formation with an aqueous fluid. By increasing the number of sites for the surface modifying treatment agent to bind onto the surface of the subterranean formation, productivity is improved.

Abstract: Fracturing slurries are prepared on the fly using a solids pump to feed the solid such as a gel into a liquid stream of normally water for pumping downhole with a large capacity triplex pump. The solids pump is preferably a Posimetric® style which delivers the solid into the fluid pipeline in a manner that keeps fluid from backing into the solids hopper above the solids pump. A separate fluid tank is connected to a fluid pump to pressurize a suction line to a boost pump before reaching the triplex pump and pumping into the subterranean formation. The solids pump can deliver between the fluid and boost pumps in which case the solids go through the triplex pump or alternatively the solids can be delivered into the higher pressure discharge line of the triplex pump.
