The present invention consists of an antenna comprising at least two radiating structures, said radiating structures taking the form of two arms, said arms being made of or limited by a conductor, superconductor or semiconductor material, said two arms being coupled to each other through a region on first and second superconducting arms such that the combined structure of the coupled two-arms forms a small antenna with a broadband behavior, a multiband behavior or a combination of both effects. According to the present invention, the coupling between the two radiating arms is obtained by means of the shape and spatial arrangement of said two arms, in which at least one portion on each arm is placed in close proximity to each other (for instance, at a distance smaller than a tenth of the longest free-space operating wavelength) to allow electromagnetic fields in one arm being transferred to the other through said specific close proximity regions. Said proximity regions are located at a distance from the feeding port of the antenna (for instance a distance larger than 1/40 of the free-space longest operating wavelength) and specifically exclude said feeding port of the antenna.

The monopole has an effective length L of one quarter wavelength at the lowest frequency f1. A dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) surrounds the monopole antenna for resonating at substantially between or at two and three times the lowest frequency f1, the DRA is of a height of less than ¾ L and is disposed in such a manner as being above the ground plane and either contacting or spaced therefrom by a gap G, wherein 0≦G≦0.2 H. The ultra-wideband antenna is of a much greater bandwidth than the sum of bandwidth of the monople or the DRA alone.

An adaptive antenna used in a receive only mode with a separate omnidirectional transmit antenna. The arrangement is especially effective for small, handheld wireless devices. The transmit antenna maybe integrated with the receive array by utilizing a horizontally polarized transmit and vertically polarized receiver ray. In other embodiments, the transmit antenna may be physically separate and not integrated with the receive array. In either case there is separate receive and transmit signal port as an interface to radio transceiver equipment. The use of an adaptive antenna in the receive only direction has the potential to increase forward links capacity to levels equal to or greater than reverse link capacity. This allows for a significant increase in the overall number of users that may be active at the same time in a wireless system.

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the upper horizontal portion and the lower horizontal portion of the double inverted-L antenna are respectively brought down and up (without being physically connected) at a distance of approximately 180 degrees (½ λ) from the RF source so as to form two additional vertical portions of the antenna. This is followed by two approximately 90-degree (¼ λ) horizontal conductors portion. The resulting radiation resistance of the low profile antenna is approximately three-times that of a double inverted-L antenna.
