Abstract:
Method and apparatus are disclosed for fabricating a one-piece can body, with profiled closed end, from flat rolled steel of selected thickness gauge and tensile strength. Such steel substrate is electrolytically metal plated to facilitate sidewall ironing into an elongated sidewall can body for pressurized beverage packs. An axially-recessed bead is formed in the endwall of a drawn cup by pulling sidewall metal for movement into such endwall. That preformed bead being symmetrically positioned in the drawn cup such that a bodymaker redraw of the drawn cup positions sheet metal of the preformed bead so as to constitute a closed end angled portion, which extends from a circular configuration base support toward contiguous sidewall. Following subsequent sidewall ironing of the bodymaker redrawn cup, a substantially-planar endwall panel, radially inward of such base support, is formed into a concave dome by moving sidewall sheet metal into the closed end of the sidewall ironed can body, thus substantially avoiding thinning of closed end sheet metal and providing desired bulge and implosion resistance. Also, reforming steps for such closed end, subsequent to can body fabrication, are eliminated.

The film is excellent in adhesion to a metal plate, moldability, heat resistance, retort resistance, odor retention property, impact resistance dent resistance and processability into a can, such as drawing fabrication, ironing fabrication or the like for producing metal cans.
Abstract:
A method for making hollow workpieces such as beverage containers with a circular die in which an aluminum alloy is strip cast whereby the alloy is solidified rapidly without substantial precipitation. Thereafter, the aluminum alloy is formed into a cup which is drawn and passed through one or more dies to iron the walls of the cup and thereby lengthen the side walls thereof using at least one circular die having a die angle of less than about 6.degree.. It has been found that the use of such small die angles prevents or minimizes galling and tearoffs.
Abstract:
In pressing and molding a shadow mask or the like, press-molding oil containing alkyl carbonate shown in the following Chemical Formula as an active ingredient is coated on a press mold. After pressing and molding a metallic material with the press mold, the press-molding oil is washed and removed with warm water. Alternatively, the oil is dried or thermally decomposed. As a result, less than about 10 .mu.g/cm.sup.2 oil is left as residue on the product. ##STR1## where a and b are an integer from one to six; x and y are an integer from 0 to 30; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are an alkyl group, cycloalkyl group, alkylphenyl group, benzyl group or alkylbenzyl group having from one to thirty carbon atoms and straight or branched alkyl chains.
Abstract:
A method of effecting press working on a blank, in which a local portion of the blank is strengthened prior to the press working, so as to achieve increased mechanical strength, due to structural transformation of the material of the blank, or by an embossing operation. The local portion is selected so that the blank exhibits improved formability and suffers from reduced fractures during the press working.
Abstract:
Draw processing flat-rolled sheet metal substrate preselectively precoated on each surface with organic coating and draw lubricant into one-piece can bodies ready for assembly into sanitary can packs free of any requirement for applying organic coating or adding organic coating for repair purposes after fabrication and before such direct usage. Cupping of precoated flat-rolled sheet metal can stock using preselected tooling configurations and clearance avoids any increase in side wall metal thickness gage. Tension elongation during redraw is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces, tooling configurations and preselected clearances to decrease thickness gage uniformly over side wall height between flange metal open end of can body and curved transition zone at closed end. High production rate blanking and cupping is achieved with out-of-phase simultaneous movement of cupping die and punch which provides for rapid discharge cup-shaped work product, open-end-down on flange at open end of cup. Surface area of the cavity entrance zone for each die is fabricated about multiple radii forming sharp edge about which coated can stock is drawn into each die cavity. Curved surface transition zone for each punch is maintained large in relation to sheet metal substrate starting gage which facilitates change of configuration of metal from planar state into cylindrical side wall.
Abstract:
A lubrication system for an body maker of the type which is used in a container fabrication facility to shape a metallic can body includes a filter, a first conduit for conveying coolant from the body maker to an inlet side of the filter, a second conduit for conveying coolant from an outlet side of the filter to the body maker, a pump in one of the conduits for pumping coolant in a circuit which includes the filter, the conduits and the body maker, and a coolant makeup system for adding coolant to the circuit. The coolant makeup system is constructed and arranged to continuously supply coolant to the circuit to make up for continuous losses of coolant at the body maker.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the iterative process optimization of drawing processes, occurring in timed sequence, in drawing presses. The clamping force which can be set at the blank holder is reduced in the case of fractures or increased in the case of part folding or maintained at the same level in the case of acceptable parts. In order to be able to detect the drawn part quality with respect to the criteria of "fractures", "acceptable" or "folding" automatically during each working cycle the normal variation of the drawing sound is determined by means of a sound emission analysis of the structure-borne sound caused by the drawn part during the drawing process in the drawing tool, and from this a characteristic level course from periodic to stochastic sound components is determined. During the production of the drawn parts, the structure-borne sound signal is examined in each case with regard to the simultaneous occurrence of abnormal amplitude discontinuities in a wide frequency spectrum and, if appropriate, it is concluded that there are "fractures". Furthermore, the structure-borne sound signal is examined in each case with regard to the temporal level course from periodic to stochastic sound components and, if appropriate, it is concluded that there are "folds".

A wall ironing ring (8, 11, 14) for use in cooperation with a punch (1) to reduce the thickness of a sidewall of a cup (17) drawn from a laminate of a polyester film and sheet aluminum or sheet aluminum alloy has a frusto conical entry surface (24) to the ring which converges at an angle between 1.degree. and 4.degree. to a central axis perpendicular to the plane of the ring and terminates at a land of short length, measured at said axis; and divergent exit surface extends from said land at an angle in the range from 5.degree. to 15.degree.. The ironing ring may be made from a material having a thermal conductivity greater than 50 W/m.degree.C. used in cooperation with a like ring of smaller land diameter held apart from the first ring by a spacer (7) in which coolant is applied to the cup.
Abstract:
A coil of pre-lubed steel strip has a steel strip substrate coated on each surface with a uniform coating of solid lubricant. The coating has a coating weight greater than 20 mg/ft..sup.2 (0.22 g/m.sup.2) for lubricity during cold deforming of the strip, as by stamping or drawing. The coating weight is less than 100 mg/ft..sup.2 (1.08 g/m.sup.2) to prevent slippage during operations incident to blanking of the strip prior to cold deforming. The coating has a needle penetration hardness in the range 9-250. Various procedures for applying the coating are described.
