摘要: An optical transceiver module having digital control of laser current peaking is disclosed. The optical transceiver module comprises a controller and integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, which are included on a printed circuit board disposed in the module. Transmitting and receiving optical sub-assemblies are also disposed in the module. A digital signal interface interconnects the controller with the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver. Digital control signals produced by the controller are transmitted via the digital signal interface to the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, where they are converted to analog control signals. The analog control signals are forwarded to control components responsible for governing the electrical current supplied to the laser of the transmitting optical sub-assembly. The laser current is intermittently peaked by the control signal in order to hasten the transition from light to no-light emission, thereby improving laser response and performance.

摘要: This disclosure concerns systems, methods and devices for temperature-based control of laser performance. One example of a method is performed in connection with a laser of an optoelectronic transceiver. In particular, the laser is operated over a range of temperatures and the optical output of the laser is monitored. During operation of the laser, the bias current and current swing supplied to the laser are adjusted to the extent necessary to maintain a substantially constant optical output from the laser over the range of temperatures.

The optical transceiver module comprises a controller and integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, which are included on a printed circuit board associated with the module. Transmitting and receiving optical sub-assemblies are also included in the module. A time division multiplexing analog control signal interface interconnects the controller with the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver. Digital control signals produced by the controller are converted and combined into a multiplexed analog control signal and transmitted via the interface to the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver. After receipt by the integrated post-amplifier/laser driver, the multiplexed analog control signal is divided into discrete analog control signals and forwarded to a plurality of control devices that use the control signals to modify a plurality of operating parameters of the transceiver module. The time division multiplexing analog control signal interface can also be employed to provide feedback to the controller relating to the operation of the control devices.

摘要: A method for optimizing a dc operating drive current of a laser diode is presented. Lasers of a particular type are characterized in terms of the dependency of certain parameters on temperature and of the minimum bias current required for adequate laser speed. The minimum bias current is determined using the operating bias current minus the threshold current all normalized by the threshold current. For individual laser diodes, the threshold current and slope efficiency are obtained at various temperatures to allow calculation at operating temperatures of interest. The minimum laser bias current for speed can then be determined over the operating temperature range. This may be done by setting the optical power to the highest value calculated using this minimum acceptable bias criterion over the operating temperature range. The ac and dc laser driver current sourcing requirements may be computed to ensure laser and module compatibility.

摘要: Methods and processes are disclosed for calibrating optoelectronic devices, such as optoelectronic transceivers and optoelectronic receivers, based upon an avalanche photodiode breakdown voltage. In general, the method involves adjusting a reverse-bias voltage of the avalanche photodiode until avalanche breakdown of the avalanche photodiode occurs. An optimized APD reverse-bias voltage is then determined by reducing the reverse-bias voltage at which avalanche breakdown occurs by a predetermined offset voltage. This process is performed at a variety of different temperatures. Information concerning each temperature and the corresponding optimized APD reverse-bias voltage is stored in a memory of the optoelectronic device.

摘要: A controller for controlling the reverse-bias voltage of an avalanche photodiode in a transceiver or receiver. The controller includes memory for storing information related to the avalanche photodiode, and analog to digital conversion circuitry for receiving an analog signal corresponding to the temperature of the avalanche photodiode, converting the received analog signal into a digital value, and storing the digital value in a predefined location within the memory. Control circuitry in the controller controls the operation of the avalanche photodiode and a temperature lookup table store in the memory. A serial interface enables a host device to read from and write to locations within the memory. The invention also controls the reverse-bias voltage of an avalanche photodiode in a transceiver or receiver.
