A method and an arrangement for operating an internal combustion engine (1), especially of a motor vehicle, is suggested, wherein fuel is conducted into a combustion chamber (4) and is there combusted. When deposits are detected in the combustion chamber (4), measures are initiated in a targeted manner for cleansing the combustion chamber (4). A knocking combustion is especially introduced and/or a cleansing liquid is added to the inducted combustion air.

A drive unit 1 for driving agricultural implements or effecting the drive in agricultural implements, has an input shaft 4 and at least one output shaft 10, 10a and a torque measuring device associated with at least one of the shafts 4 or 10, 10a. The shafts 4, 10, 10a are rotatably held in two spaced bearings 5, 6, 13, 14. To determine shaft twisting as representative of the shaft torque, strain gauges 32, 32a are provided and associated with the first shaft 4. The gauges 32, 32a are attached to the outer face 19 of the first shaft 4 between its bearings 5, 6. An electronic measuring unit 31 is arranged and protected in a transverse bore 26 of the shaft 4. Slip rings, which serve to transmit values and energy, are arranged in a separate, sealed receiving space 33 outside the drive housing filled with lubricant, towards the connecting journal 7 of the first shaft 4. By arranging the electronic measuring unit 31 in a transverse bore 26 it is ensured that even at higher speeds, no rotational out-balance occurs. Furthermore, the measuring unit 31 is protected.

In a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine, the system calculates the pulse width of the angle-synchronous fuel injection pulses from a main load sensor, such as an inlet manifold pressure sensor (22) or a hot film or hot wire air mass meter (24). Under rapidly-changing load conditions of the engine, the signal from the main load sensor is not sufficiently accurate to maintain a closely stoichiometric mixture. The present invention provides a throttle valve angle sensor for monitoring the degree of opening of an engine throttle (18), and changes the calculation of the basic angle-synchronous fuel injection signal when the measured rate of change of the throttle valve angle reaches a predetermined valve. The change of calculation may comprise altering filtering characteristics of a filter function normally applied to the basic angle-synchronous fuel injection signal, altering the sampling of the signal from the engine load sensor, or deriving the basic angle-synchronous fuel injection signal from the throttle valve angle signal instead of from the main load sensor signal. Furthermore, the load change compensation may be changed to a calculation from the throttle valve load signal instead of the main load signal. The system may also be arranged to inject one or more intermediate asynchronous fuel injection pulses in between the normal angle-synchronous injections, to enable the fuel/air mixture to follow a rapid change in engine load more closely.

It is checked whether, due to the retardation of the ignition angle, a variable like, for example, a misfiring, characteristic for the combustibility of the air/fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, exceeds a predefined limiting value in terms of a deterioration of the combustibility, and in this case, at least one actuator of the internal combustion engine, different from an actuator for setting the ignition angle, such as the exhaust-gas recirculation valve or EGR valve, for instance, is controlled along the lines of improving the combustibility of the air/fuel mixture.
