Abstract:
An adhesive comprises a mixture of polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds, a Redox catalyst and 0.1 to 1%, based on the total weight, of a paraffin wax, montana wax, beeswax, ceresin or spermaceti. The polymerizable mixture preferably comprises a vinyl monomer together with a polymer. The adhesives which are exemplified are: (1) a mixture of vinyl toluene, polystyrene, divinyl benzene, neoprene, acrylic acid, diethylol-p-toluidine, hydroquinone and paraffin wax, which is mixed shortly before use with 3% of a hardening paste consisting of 50% of benzoyl peroxide in dibutyl phthalate; (2) a mixture of unsaturated polyester, monostyrene, coumarone resin, diethylol-p-toluidine, quinone and paraffin wax, mixed with 1% benzoyl peroxide; (3) a mixture of unsaturated polyester, monostyrene, butyl acrylate, ground shale, iron oxide, "Aerosil" (Registered Trade Mark), cyclized rubber, ketone-aldehyde resin, diethylol-p-toluidine, quinone and paraffin wax, mixed with the same hardener as in (1). The adhesives are particularly suitable for bonding metals and filling cavities. Specifications 713,332 and 744,468 are referred to.
