This invention relates to a process for maintaining heat transfer capacity of a cycle cooler while polymerizing olefin(s) in the presence of catalyst and a carboxylate metal salt by controlling the amount of carboxylate metal salt present in the reaction system. In particular, the invention relates to maintaining a cycle cooler performance parameter substantially constant while polymerizing olefin(s) in the presence of a carboxylate metal salt and a conventional-type transition metal polymerization catalyst compound, or a metallocene-type polymerization catalyst compound. This invention further relates to a process wherein the cycle cooler performance parameter is a heat transfer capacity of the cycle cooler, a pressure drop across the cooler, or a cooler approach temperature of a cycle cooler.

In some embodiments, a method including the steps of: during a polymerization reaction producing a polymer resin in a fluid bed reactor, measuring reaction parameters including at least reactor temperature, at least one property of the resin, and amount of at least one condensable diluent gas in the reactor; determining from at least one measured resin property using a predetermined correlation, a dry melt initiation temperature value for a dry version of the polymer resin; and during the reaction, using a melt initiation temperature depression model to determine in on-line fashion a reduced melt initiation temperature for the resin (e.g., a temperature at which the resin is expected to begin to melt) in the presence of the at least one condensable diluent gas in the reactor.

Branched ethylene-propylene compositions which have improved melt strength and shear thinning are provided. The weight average branching index g′ for the higher molecular weight region of the ethylene-propylene composition is less than 0.95. Additionally, a novel process is provided for efficiently producing a branched ethylene-propylene composition comprising: a) contacting propylene monomers and ethylene monomers in a reactor with an inert hydrocarbon solvent or diluent and a catalyst composition comprising one or more single site catalyst compounds capable of producing an ethylene-propylene polymer at a temperature from about 50° C. to about 180° C., wherein the ratio in the reactor of the propylene and ethylene monomers to the inert hydrocarbon solvent or diluent is less than 2.0, and further, wherein the propylene and ethylene monomers and the inert hydrocarbon solvent or diluent comprise no more than 90 percent of the total contents of the reactor; and b) recovering a branched ethylene-propylene composition, wherein the weight average branching index g′ for the higher molecular weight region of the ethylene-propylene composition is less than 0.95.

A polyolefin composition is provided which consists essentially of isotactic polypropylene and, optionally, repeating units of one or more comonomers, wherein the total comonomer repeating unit content of the polyolefin composition is from 0 to 20 mole percent, and further, wherein the weight average branching index g′ for the lower molecular weight region of the polyolefin composition is less than 0.93. Additionally, a process is provided for producing a polyolefin composition comprising: a) contacting, in solution, at a temperature from about 90° C. to about 120° C., propylene monomers with a catalyst composition comprising a first chiral, stereorigid transition metal catalyst compound capable of producing isotactic polypropylene; b) copolymerizing the product of a) with propylene and, optionally, one or more copolymerizable monomers, in a polymerization reactor under suitable polypropylene polymerization conditions using a second chiral, stereorigid transition metal catalyst capable of producing isotactic polypropylene; and c) recovering a branched olefin polymer.

The invention is a polyethylene composition having a polydispersity index of less than or equal to 3, an average branching index (g') as measured by GPC/Vis.gtoreq.0.9, and a melt strength (MS) (centiNewton, 190.degree. C.) that satisfies the relationship: ##EQU1## In a preferred embodiment these polyethylene compositions comprise A) branched polyethylene copolymers prepared by insertion polymerization of ethylene, ethylene-containing macromers, and optionally, additional copolymerizable monomers, and B) essentially linear ethylene copolymers. Improved melt strength without sacrificing the benefits of narrow polydispersity index are exhibited by the invention compositions.

A process for the production of an ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer is disclosed, the process including polymerizing ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin by contacting the ethylene and the at least one alpha-olefin with a metallocene catalyst in at least one gas phase reactor at a reactor pressure of from 0.7 to 70 bar and a reactor temperature of from 20° C. to 150° C. to form an ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer. The resulting ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer may have a density D of 0.927 g/cc or less, a melt index (I2) of from 0.1 to 100 dg/min, a MWD of from 1.5 to 5.0. The resulting ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer may also have a peak melting temperature Tmax second melt satisfying the following relation: Tmax second melt>D*398−245.

The method can also include measuring electrical signals detected by the probe as some charged particles pass the probe without contacting the probe while other charged particles contact the probe. The measured electrical signals can be manipulated to provide an output. The method can also include determining from the output if the charged particles contacting the probe have, on average, a different charge than the charged particles that pass the probe without contacting the probe.

In some embodiments, a method including the steps of monitoring a polymerization reaction which produces a polymer resin in a fluid bed reactor, where a dry melt reference temperature is characteristic of melting behavior of a dry version of the resin, and in response to data indicative of at least one monitored parameter of the reaction, determining in on-line fashion a reduced melt reference temperature that is at least substantially equal to the difference between the dry melt reference temperature and a temperature by which the dry melt reference temperature is depressed by the presence of condensable diluent gas with the resin in the reactor. Optionally, the method also includes the step of controlling the reaction in response to the reduced melt reference temperature or a stickiness parameter determined from the reduced melt reference temperature.
