Various embodiments of a medical module are provided which includes a primary module housing, a secondary module housing, a dosage sensor, a power source, and a microcontroller. The module is configured to be attached to a disposable drug delivery pen or a reusable drug delivery pen so that the module may: determine dosage selected, injection of selected dosage, duration of injection, time of injection, whether the pen has been primed or shaken to thoroughly mix up insulin mixtures, transmit information relating to insulin dosage and injection to a data management unit, provide reminders, error warning or messages on improper usage or reusage of needles, track amount of drug remaining on board the pen or duration of usage of pen with respect to expiry of the drug on board, or provide an audible alarm for locating misplaced pen and module.
Abstract:
A method for packing a chromatography column having an inlet port at one end and an outlet port at the other, comprises feeding a slurry or smoke of particulate bed material in a carrier fluid and applying a predetermined pressure to the bed material while allowing the carrier fluid to escape, wherein both the inlet and outlet ports are protected by porous bed-retaining means positioned apart to provide a space for the bed between them, at least a final portion of the slurry or smoke being fed through a filler tube into the space for the bed until the space is full and the bed extends back into the filler tube, predetermined pressure to the bed being applied via the slurry or smoke in the filler tube, and the filler tube then sealed being against relaxation of the bed pressure.
Abstract:
A micro-organism of the Beggiatoa type is cultured with agitation under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium and the biomass and/or the culture medium is collected. The micro-organism used may be obtained from baregine. The bacteriostatic substance produced may be used for skin massages or as an ingredient for a cosmetic product, for example for the skin.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of zeaxanthin which comprises culturing a microorganism of the genus Flavobacter producing this pigment in a nutrient medium containing at least one carbohydrate as assimilable carbon source, at least one source of assimilable amino nitrogen containing free amino acids, mineral salts, oligoelements and vitamins, the composition of the medium being modified by adding pyridoxine to it, and continuing culturing until a substantial quantity of intracellular zeaxanthin has been obtained.

Abstract:
The invention concerns complexity management of a receiver in a multi-access/user communication system where interference exists. For example, but not limited to, multi-user detection at the receiver in the uplink of a code division multiple access DS/CDMA system. The invention provides a method for power management and decoding schedule optimisation by deriving (40) an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) function for an interference canceller and a plurality of decoders. Then, determining (42) a power level for each of the plurality of users based on the derived EXIT functions; and then deriving (44) a decoding schedule for the plurality of decoders based on the derived EXIT functions and determined power levels. It is an advantage of the invention that optimization is broken into two parts. There is no trade-off between computational complexity (number of iterations) and the improvement in bit error rate performance at a given signal-to-noise ratio. Using the invention, large gains in receiver sensitivity (i.e. in power efficiency and/or spectrum efficiency therefore reducing interference from the terminals) and computational complexity can be achieved simultaneously.
Abstract:
A disc player that incorporates a single piece disc enclosure and a chassis section is described. The incorporation of the disc enclosure and the chassis section into a single piece eliminates the requirement for a separate damping system. As well as reducing the cost of manufacturing the device this also allows for the tolerance between the spindle motor and the disc enclosure to be precisely controlled so enabling miniaturization of the disc player.
Abstract:
A process for producing a Monascus pigment by growing a microorganism of the genus Monascus in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions. The microorganism is grown at a pH-value in the range from 4 to 7 in a first medium which promotes its growth; a first biomass is obtained; the first biomass thus obtained is transferred to a second medium which stimulates the production of pigment; the pH is adjusted to a value in the range from 2 to 4; the growth process is continued for a period of 2 to 7 days at a temperature in the range from 20.degree. to 35.degree. C. and pigment is extracted with a solvent from the second biomass obtained.
