Aqueous polymer dispersions useful for coating substrates are prepared by polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers in aqueous medium in the presence of radical formers and hydrophilically modified, urethane-group-containing emulsifiers having an average molecular weight below 30,000, wherein the urethane-group-containing emulsifiers are oligourethanes having a branched molecular structure which(i) are produced from organic polyisocyanates and organic compounds containing isocyanate-reactive groups with the reactants containing hydrophilic groups or groups convertible into hydrophilic groups and which are monofunctional or difunctional to isocyanate addition reaction, with the molar ratio of monofunctional hydrophilic components to the corresponding difunctional components being at least 2:1, and which(ii) have a content of chemically incorporated hydrophilic groups sufficient to impart the oligourethane solubility or dispersibility in water, with the proviso that, on a statistical average, at least 2.2 terminally incorporated hydrophilic groups are present per molecule.

The present invention is directed to a process for coating substrates with polyurethane ureas which is characterized in that a substrate is coated with a product, which has been obtained by the reation of (A) a prepolymer based on an aromatic polyisocyanate containing on average two ketoxime-blocked NCO groups and having an average molecular weight of about 500 to 15,000 with (B) a chain-extending agent corresponding to the formulaH.sub.2 N--R'--NH.sub.2in which R' is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, in the presence of solvents at temperatures above 50.degree. C. and at an equivalent ratio of blocked NCO groups to NH.sub.2 groups of 1.43 to 1.02, wherein after about 40 to 90% of the available amino groups have reacted, the reaction is completed with crosslinking at temperatures above 120.degree. C.The present invention is also directed to the coated substrates produced by this process.

Polyisocyanates with biuret structures are produced at temperatures above 250.degree. C. More specifically, an excess of a diisocyanate having aliphatically and/or cycloaliphatically bound isocyanate groups is reacted with a diamine containing aliphatically and/or cycloaliphatically bound amino groups at temperatures above 250.degree. C. for relatively brief periods of time. Water and/or polyvalent alcohols may optionally be included in the reaction mixture. The polyisocyanates with biuret structures produced by this process are characterized by good color, good dilutability with covalent solvents and comparatively low viscosity.

The present invention relates to solutions of isocyanato-isocyanurates based on mixtures of (i) 2,4- and/or 2,6-diisocyanato-toluene and (ii) 2,2'-, 2,4'- and/or 4,4'-diisocyanato-diphenyl methane in a molar ratio of (i) to (ii) of about 5:1 to 1:3, in plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride wherein the isocyanato-isocyanurates comprise about 1 to 50% by weight of the solution. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing these solutions which comprise partially trimerizing the isocyanate groups of the above diisocyanates using catalysts which accelerate the trimerization of isocyanate groups, the reaction either being conducted in the presence of plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride or the reaction product being dissolved in a plasticizer of this type, optionally after the separation of excess, unreacted diisocyanate.In addition, the present invention relates to the use of these solutions as adhesion-improving additives for coating compositions based on polyvinyl chloride. Besides improved adhesion, these compositions also demonstrate improved resistance to discoloration during thermal processing.

The present disclosure is concerned with solvent free or very low solvent coating compositions suitable for use on flexible sheet form substrates particularly textile substrates. The composition comprises a urethane group-containing prepolymer with OH or CONH.sub.2 terminal groups mixed with a urea or melamine formaldehyde resin and a stable aqueous polymer dispersion or solution. The composition may also contain small amounts of an organic solvent. The coating can be applied to the substrate by direct or reverse coating techniques.
