Abstract:
A process is disclosed using a dispersion of supercritical fluid and oil to upgrade a hydrocarbon feedstock such as a heavy oil into an upgraded hydrocarbon product or synthetic crude with highly desirable properties such as low sulfur content, low metals content, lower density (higher API), lower viscosity, lower residuum content, etc. The process utilizes a capillary mixer to form the dispersion. The process does not require external supply of hydrogen nor does it use externally supplied catalysts.
Abstract:
A method for reducing mercaptan concentration in a liquid hydrocarbon, comprising: contacting a mercaptan-rich liquid hydrocarbon having a first concentration of mercaptan sulfur with a composition comprising an oxidizing agent and water wherein the molar ratio of the oxidizing agent to mercaptan sulfur in the mercaptan-rich liquid hydrocarbon is from 3:1 to 10:1; and separating the water from the liquid hydrocarbon to yield a mercaptan-depleted liquid hydrocarbon having a second concentration of mercaptan sulfur, the second concentration being less than the first concentration; wherein a major amount of mercaptan compounds in the mercaptan-rich liquid hydrocarbon are converted to at least one sulfur oxoacid or salt thereof, having the formula: [RSOx]nY wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group; x is an integer from 1 to 3; n is 1 or 2; and Y is hydrogen, an alkaline metal, or alkaline earth metal.
Abstract:
A process useful for treating biologically derived oils in the production of biofuels is described. A biologically derived oil feed is deoxygenated by contacting the feed with a metal titanate catalyst. The process does not require the addition of hydrogen.

Various disease in plants can be controlled by the invention and that of grape downy mildew, rice sheath and culm blight, rice blast, tomato early blight, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, wheat leaf blotch, wheat powdery mildew, cucumber powdery mildew, cucumber downy mildew, cucumber grey mold and so on.
Abstract:
An image presentation device (100) incorporates an optical combiner (130) that utilizes a multi-state optical switch (131, 137) for use with a plurality of colored light sources (122, 124,126). The switch (131,137) includes an electronically switchable holographic optical element HOE (131) having a first and a second mode of operation. Light from first and second light sources (124, 126) passes through HOE (131) in a diffracted manner in at least one of the first and second modes of operation. Light from a third light source (122) is reflected by a reflector (137) in a third mode of operation. The combiner (130) operates to combine light from the various light sources (122, 124, 126) into a common light path.
Abstract:
Caspase activity and apoptosis are promoted using active, dimeric Smac peptide mimetics of the general formula M1-L-M2, wherein moieties M1 and M2 are monomeric Smac mimetics and L is a covalent linker. Target cancerous or inflammatory cells are contacted with an effective amount of an active, dimeric Smac mimetic, and a resultant increase in apoptosis of the target cells is detected. The contacting step may be effected by administering to a pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of the dimeric mimetic, wherein the individual may be subject to concurrent or antecedent radiation or chemotherapy for treatment of a neoproliferative pathology.
Abstract:
A process using supercritical water to upgrade a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock into an upgraded hydrocarbon product or syncrude with highly desirable properties (low sulfur content, low metals content, lower density (higher API) lower viscosity, lower residuum content, etc.) is described. The process does not require external supply of hydrogen nor does it use externally supplied catalysts. A reactor design to carry out the process is also described,

Nucleoside analogs, nucleic acids and pharmaceutical agents comprising same, and to the use of said nucleoside analogs, nucleic acids and pharmaceutical agents in the diagnosis, prophylaxis or therapy of a viral, bacterial, fungicidal and/or parasitic infection, or of cancer, particularly of hepatitis infections. The invention also relates to a method for the preparation of said nucleoside analogs and to a kit and the use thereof in the prophylaxis and therapy of viral diseases, particularly of hepatitis infections. As stated in 37 C.F.R. §1.72(b): A brief abstract of the technical disclosure in the specification must commence on a separate sheet, preferably following the claims, under the heading “Abstract of the Disclosure.” The purpose of the abstract is to enable the Patent and Trademark Office and the public generally to determine quickly from a cursory inspection the nature and gist of the technical disclosure. The abstract shall not be used for interpreting the scope of the claims. Therefore, any statements made relating to the abstract are not intended to limit the claims in any manner and should not be interpreted as limiting the claims in any manner.
Abstract:
An assay element is described including recognition ligands adapted for binding to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) bound to a film on a single mode planar optical waveguide, the film from the group of a membrane, a polymerized bilayer membrane, and a self-assembled monolayer containing polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol groups therein and an assay process for detecting the presence of CEA is described including injecting a possible CEA-containing sample into a sensor cell including the assay element, maintaining the sample within the sensor cell for time sufficient for binding to occur between CEA present within the sample and the recognition ligands, injecting a solution including a reporter ligand into the sensor cell; and, interrogating the sample within the sensor cell with excitation light from the waveguide, the excitation light provided by an evanescent field of the single mode penetrating into the biological target-containing sample to a distance of less than about 200 nanometers from the waveguide thereby exciting any bound reporter ligand within a distance of less than about 200 nanometers from the waveguide and resulting in a detectable signal.
Abstract:
An improved structure and construction method to form a smooth hydrophilic surface are described. A layer of a photo-catalyst, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), is mopped on the smooth surface to achieve self and convenient clearance abilities, which can be widely used on/with interior decoration and building structure. The photo-TiO2-catalyst solution is mopped on the smooth surface with the absorbent material. The invention is self-clearing and convenient, maintains a clean surface, economizes manpower and is effectively used.
