Abstract:
A new gel-like composition of matter containing a complex carbohydrate with a high degree of carboxyl substitution cross-linked by an organic cross-linker has been developed. The cross-linkers have complex ring structures, e.g., polynuclear or heterocyclic compounds, which permit development of two distinct partial positive charges under conditions where a carbohydrate is negatively charged. Antibiotics are the preferred cross-linking agents and a method of sustained release of the antibodies is also disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention concerns lipid vesicles having dimethylamides as their primary structural lipid. Preferred dimethylamides useful in the invention are DMATO and DMASO oils. These vesicles are useful as carriers of water immiscible oily material such as fungicides. In a most preferred aspect, the invention has DMATO vesicles with TCMTB as a fungicide in trapped therein. The vesicles can be made rapidly and provide aqueous dispersion of these materials without the need for additional organic solvents.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a skin treatment composition comprising a Mahonia aquifolium extract in a liposome delivery system. The Mahonia aquifolium extract is present in the skin treatment composition in a range of from 5% to 20% by weight of the total composition. The skin treatment composition is particularly effective in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema and other dry skin conditions. The invention further provides a process for obtaining an extract of Mahonia aquifolium.
Abstract:
A fluid preparation of petrolatum capable of being sprayed on to a surface. The preparation includes paucilamellar lipid vesicles containing the petrolatum. Preferably, petrolatum comprises about 20-30% or more of the total weight of the vesicles. Methods of protecting the skin of mammals using the fluid preparation of petrolatum are also discussed.
Abstract:
Liquid energy sources, e.g., liquid fuels comprising lipid vesicles having fuel additives such as water are disclosed herein. The liquid energy sources, methods for preparation, and methods of enhancing engine performance disclosed herein employing the lipid vesicles result in enhanced fuel efficiency and/or lowered engine emissions. The invention further relates to liquid energy sources containing such additives which further comprise a polymeric dispersion assistant, which reduces the interfacial tension and coalescence of vesicles during dispersion process and storage, and thereby provide transparent looks to the liquid energy source.
Abstract:
A reduced fat chocolate preparation comprising lipid vesicles is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing the reduced fat chocolate preparation. The chocolate has less fat than regular chocolate and a higher percentage of water.
Abstract:
Lipid vesicles which remain stable at high temperatures are disclosed. The vesicles contain as a component of their lipid bilayers at least one ethoxylated alcohol having a linear C20-C50 carbon chain. Also disclosed is a method of making the vesicles. The lipid vesicles are useful in forming cosmetic and dermatologic preparations, such as lipstick, which are processed at high temperatures (e.g., at 80.degree. C. or above) during manufacture.
Abstract:
An antacid product having extended duration of residence in the gastric and upper intestinal systems has been developed. This antacid product includes a blend of 10-70% by volume nonphospholipid lipid vesicles, with a particulate base. An antiflatulence agent may also be included. A method of providing extended duration amelioration of acid build up in the gastric and upper intestinal tract using this product is also disclosed.
Abstract:
Disclosed are lipid vesicles containing a blend of amphiphiles, including sucrose distearate, in the lipid bilayers. The vesicles may have either an aqueous or oil-filled central cavity and are particularly useful for delivering dermatological, cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. A method of manufacture for these vesicles is also disclosed.
