A prosthetic device for the human hip having elongated fins or other like protrusions which are provided on the underside of a collar and which extend into previously formed slots or grooves in the bone. Either a plurality of fins, or a single fin having a non-rectilinear shape is provided. Apparatus for formation of the grooves in the bone includes a mill guide which can be mounted onto the proximal end of a rasp embedded in a cavity formed in the bone. A milling bit is used in conjunction with the mill guide to form precisely located and shaped grooves into which the fins can seat. A clamp is provided for securing the prosthetic device to the femur while the cement is hardening.

A clamp for the femoral stem of a total hip replacement. The clamp engages a top surface of the stem and a portion of the femur to urge the stem into the femoral cavity during hardening of the cement. The clamp includes a stem having a ball on one end which is adapted to seat in a depression on the upper surface of the stem. In one embodiment, the depression is disposed on a collar extending from the stem. The other end of the clamp includes spikes or the like for engagement of the femur. Typically, a spring biases the ball toward the spike to urge the stem downwardly into the femoral cavity.

A prosthesis is provided for replacing a bone surface. The prosthesis includes an implant having a surface for abutting a bone, and an augment configured to be attached to the surface of the implant by bone cement to compensate for bone loss. The augment is formed to include an aperture therein defined by an inner wall. The prosthesis also includes a plastic peg coupled to the implant. The peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the augment and to engage the inner wall of the augment to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant to permit the implant to be installed onto the bone before the bone cement cures. Alternately, the surface of the implant is formed to include an aperture therein, and a plastic retaining ring located in the aperture formed in the surface of the implant. A metal peg is coupled to the augment. The metal peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the implant and to engage the plastic retaining ring therein to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant.

The spacers include a body having a frontal portion and a trailing portion. The body of the spacers narrowing with distance from said frontal portion toward said trailing portion. The narrowing body of the spacers interrupting the flow of cement along the implant body as the body is inserted into a cement filled intramedullary canal. The narrowing trailing portion of the spacers cause the cement flow to smoothly re-attach to the implant body without creating substantial disturbances or vortexes in the cement.

Each one of the parts includes a joining location, the two joining locations facing each other when the device parts are positioned for being joined together, wherein one of the joining locations includes a material which is liquefiable by mechanical vibration and the other one of the joining locations includes a material which is not liquefiable by mechanical vibration and a structure (e.g. undercut cavities or protrusions) suitable for forming a positive fit connection with the liquefiable material. The joining process is effected by pressing the two device parts against each other and by applying ultrasonic vibration to one of the device parts when the two parts are positioned relative to each other such that the two joining locations are in contact with each other.

An anchorage in tissue is produced by holding a vibrating element and a counter element against each other such that their contact faces are in contact with each other, wherein at least one of the contact faces comprises a thermoplastic material which is liquefiable by mechanical vibration. While holding and then moving the two elements against each other, the vibrating element is vibrated and due to the vibration the thermoplastic material is liquefied between the contract faces, and due to the relative movement is made to flow from between the contact faces and to penetrate tissue located adjacent to outer edges of the contact faces. For liquefaction of the thermoplastic material and for displacing it from between the contact faces no force needs to act on the tissue surface which is to be penetrated by the liquefied material. For this reason anchorage in tissue which has little mechanical stability is possible.
