A method is provided for modifying the functionality and aesthetic characteristics of a vehicle. The method includes removing a first body from a vehicle chassis, wherein the first body and vehicle chassis form a first type of vehicle. A second body is then attached to the vehicle chassis without subjecting the second body to significant value-added manufacturing processes. The second body and vehicle chassis form a second type of vehicle different from the first type of vehicle and having different functionality and aesthetic characteristics. The bodies and chassis comply with a standardized body/chassis interface system which enables such interchangeability of bodies on a single chassis, or on a family of chassis.

An accelerated vehicle development process includes establishing a common, standardized interface system whereby different types of vehicle bodies may be attached to a single chassis design. Chassis and bodies are designed, manufactured and validated independently of each other in accordance with the standardized interface system, thereby accelerating the development process. As new bodies are designed to mate with the previously manufactured and validated chassis, the newly designed bodies may be developed more quickly in response to market demand and attached to the previously validated chassis.

A system for determining accurate inertial navigation data of a vehicle while moving must compensate for the orientation differences between an upper body and a lower body of the vehicle. These orientation differences are used to increase the accuracy of the aided inertial navigation solution. An odometer on the lower body is used to reduced errors in the inertial date arising from movement between the upper and low bodies and errors in the odometer associated with vehicle pitch are reduced by sensing pitch changes with the inertial navigation data.

The forward suspension is mounted only to the forward portion of the molded body and includes a transverse member on which vertical bearings for the steerable guidance wheels are mounted, however, the transverse member is connected to the flexible body only by a pair of longitudinally extending members which are freely rotatably connected to the transverse member at their forward ends.

The vibration insulating pad comprises a head section and a body section which are coaxially integral with each other through a neck section. A generally annular groove is formed between the head and body sections and around the neck section. An axially extending central through-hole is formed throughout the head, neck and body sections. Additionally, an axially extending slit is continuously formed extending from the inner to outer surfaces of the pad. The slit is located generally tangential with respect to the through-hole thereby facilitating deforming the pad long and narrow by hands of an operator prior to the installation operation for the pad.

The base includes opposing U-shaped retainer arms that face each other and that define a bolt passageway therebetween. A plate including an internally tapped cylinder having a diameter less than the bolt passageway is disposed in the base between the arms, with the tapped cylinder positioned in the bolt passageway and the plate floatingly retained between the arms. With this combination of structure, the plate can move in the base. Consequently, a bolt can be engaged with a component of the rear suspension of the vehicle and advanced into the bolt passageway, and then the plate with cylinder moved as necessary to threadably engage the bolt to couple the suspension to the frame rail while absorbing minor manufacturing tolerance variations.

A railway truck leveling valve arrangement for improved railway car floor height control comprises a pneumatic level regulating valve, a rigid, lightweight bar, and a leveling valve linkage. The level regulating valve is connected to and mounted above a secondary air spring suspension. The rigid, lightweight bar extends between the axleboxes of the railway truck wheelsets, the railway truck wheelsets being coupled to a primary suspension. The leveling valve linkage connects the level regulating valve and the rigid bar. The level regulating valve senses spring deflection in both the primary and secondary suspensions and signals the secondary air spring suspension to compensate for both deflections. Consequently, the correction of the overall railway car floor height by the secondary suspension provides more precise car floor to station platform height control.
