Abstract: A through-the-road (TTR) hybridization strategy is proposed to facilitate introducing hybrid electric vehicle technology in a significant portion of current and expected trucking fleets. In some cases, the technologies can be retrofitted onto an existing vehicle (e.g., a trailer, a tractor-trailer configuration, etc.). In some cases, the technologies can be built into new vehicles. In some cases, one vehicle may be built or retrofitted to operate in tandem with another and provide the hybridization benefits contemplated herein. By supplementing motive forces delivered through a primary drivetrain and fuel-fed engine with supplemental torque delivered at one or more electrically-powered drive axles, improvements in overall fuel efficiency and performance may be delivered, typically without significant redesign of existing components and systems that have been proven in the trucking industry.

Abstract: Methods and systems for an electric drive axle of a vehicle are provided. A gear train in an electric drive axle system includes, in one example, an input shaft configured to rotationally couple to an electric motor-generator and including a first gear and an intermediate shaft including a second gear rotationally coupled to the first gear and a third gear and a fourth gear each configured to rotationally couple to a separate gear on an output shaft. In this example, the second gear, the third gear, and the fourth gear have different sizes, the third gear includes an axial extension having at outer surface, and an interior surface of the second gear circumferentially surrounds at least a portion of the outer surface of the axial extension.

Abstract: An electric drive unit and method of assembling the same is disclosed. The electric drive unit includes a rotor having a rotor shaft, and gear shaft, where the rotor shaft is inserted into the gear shaft. The gear shaft is supported by two bearings, while the rotor shaft supported directly at one end by a bearing and at the other by the gear shaft. A wave spring is also disclosed that provides an axial loading to the rotor shaft. Also disclosed is a balancing ring secured to an end of the rotor via a locknut. The balancing ring can be machined in order to balance the rotor. The rotor shaft can be connected to the gear shaft via a spline connection. The rotor shaft can bear against the gear shaft via a pilot journal and pilot bore defined on the rotor shaft and gear shaft respectively.

Abstract: An axle drive for a vehicle includes at least one drivable vehicle axle oriented transversely to a longitudinal direction of the vehicle. A drive shaft extends parallel with the longitudinal direction and receives drive power from an electric motor at an input section and outputs said drive power at an output section. A driven shaft extends parallel with the drive shaft and receives drive power from the output section of the drive shaft at an input section and outputs said drive power to the vehicle axle via a bevel gear arranged at a first end of the driven shaft. A brake, in particular a parking brake, includes a brake disk arranged at a second end of the driven shaft and between the input section of the drive shaft and the input section of the driven shaft with respect to the longitudinal direction.

Abstract: A drivetrain includes a main shaft, driven by an electric motor, and a wheel output shaft. Two gearwheels, mounted around the output shaft to rotate freely, are meshing with respective main pinions integral with the main shaft. A clutch system car engage either one of the gearwheel with the output shaft. To reduce the load applied to the gearwheels, the drivetrain includes a recirculation shaft, freely rotating relative to a housing of the drivetrain, and two recirculation pinion, integral with the recirculation shaft, each meshing with a respective gearwheel. When the clutch system engages one of the gearwheel with the output shaft, the recirculation shaft is driven by the main shaft through the other gearwheel meshing with the respective main and recirculation pinions, and the output shaft is driven both by the main and recirculation shafts, through the engaged gearwheel meshing with the respective main and recirculation pinions.

Abstract: A low floor road vehicle, in the form for example of a passenger bus, includes a front module that includes the front load-carrying axle at its front, a rear module including the rear load-carrying axle, a central module having a flat floor and lateral side walls that longitudinally extend beyond both longitudinal ends of the flat floor so as to define front and back module attaching portions, and a roof mounted to both lateral side walls so as to extend beyond the floor both towards the front and back, which brings rigidity to the overall structure. The vehicle being modular, the central module can be configured to a specific application, for example by varying the length thereof, while same configurations of the front and rear modules can be used in all applications. Also, the front axle being located at the front of the front module, the access to the passenger area defined by the flat floor is improved.
