A metal wire or a metal strip having a lubricating surface layer is disclosed wherein the surface layer comprises a mixture of a fatty acid having 10-22 carbon atoms and an alkali metal soap of said fatty acid. Furthermore a method of preparing such a wire or strip is disclosed wherein the wire/strip is contacted with a mixture of fatty acid and alkali metal soap according to the above to the formation of the surface layer containing the mixture on the surface of the wire/strip, which surface layer is allowed or caused to dry. The invention also relates to the use of a mixture of fatty acid and an alkali metal soap according to the above for coating as a lubricating surface layer on metal wires or metal strips.

A lubrication block, with or without a cavity, or a lubrication bag, for lubricating an ID surface of a tire and an OD surface of a plurality of pads of rotary trunnion supported equipment, such as a kiln, cooler, dryer, reactor, granulator and ball mill operating at temperatures from 100.degree. F. to 500.degree. F. or higher. The tire has inner and outer faces, and the inner face of the tire is slipped over the plurality of pads or filler bars welded to an outer shell of the rotary equipment. The lubrication block or bag is sized so as to be inserted in between the pads. The lubrication block comprises a lubricant and a solid carrier for said lubricant. The carrier is selected from the group consisting of waxes such as paraffin, polymers, copolymers such as ethylene or polyethylene glycol or mixtures thereof, and the lubricant comprises powdered carbon and a soft metal powder (e.g. copper, zinc, aluminum) or a noble metal powder (e.g. silver, copper).

The present invention relates to a cooling fluid for metal cutting, drilling, grinding and other fabricating operations comprising a compound of the formula C.sub.6 H.sub.4 (OH)COOR, where R is selected from the group consisting of --H,--CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5,--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, and --C.sub.4 H.sub.9, a ketone with a boiling point of at least about 150.degree. F., and an at least partially soluble acid.The present invention also relates to a process and fluid product made by a certain process for cooling tools and workpieces for metal cutting, drilling, grinding and other fabricating operations comprising the steps of mixing a compound of the formula C.sub.6 H.sub.4 (OH)COOR, where R is selected from the group consisting of --H,--CH.sub.3,--C.sub.2 H.sub.5,--C.sub.3 H.sub.7, and --C.sub.4 H.sub.9, a ketone with a boiling point of at least about 150.degree. In addition, a method is discussed of lubricating the solid surfaces of moving parts with a relatively water resistant, dry lubricant. The lubricant repels water and sheds dirt. Thus, this lubricant is particularly useful for lubricating high performance products that are used in a dirty environment.

There is disclosed a metal sheet product, more particularly formed food container stock and/or industrial sheet product, which has been treated with an ester-free, lubricant composition that is suitable for direct food contact. This composition consists essentially of: (i) about 10-90 wt. % of a polyalphaolefin; (ii) about 10-90 wt. % of an oleic acid; (iii) about 0-60 wt. % of an isostearic acid; and preferably, about 10-35 wt. % isostearic acid. It should be noted that especially good smudge testing results were observed with the presence of oleic acid. In alternative embodiments, the lubricant composition further includes: (iv) up to about 5 wt. % of an antioxidant, preferably about 0.1-3 wt. % butylated hydroxytoluene; and (v) up to about 10 wt. % of a conductivity enhancer, such as about 2-7 wt. % lecithin. When applied in total deposited weights of about 0.1-30 mg/ft2 per side, this invention produces formed food container stock or industrial sheet having improved formability and relatively lower smudge results when compared to its fatty acid and ester-containing alternatives.
