This disclosure relates to vinyl terminated macromer (VTM) based synthetic basestocks and their methods of preparation, lubricant compositions, methods of lubrication and products so lubricated. The VTM based synthetic basestocks useful for fuels and lubricants include oligomerization or polymerization products of one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) having a molecular weight from 84 to 10080. The one or more allylic VTMs are oligomerized or polymerized in the presence of a catalyst under oligomerization or polymerization conditions sufficient to give the VTM based synthetic basestock. The catalyst can be a metallocene catalyst or an acid catalyst, e.g., Lewis acid. The one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) can be one or more allylic vinyl terminated atactic polypropylene macromers (VTM aPP) having a molecular weight from 84 to 2250 and having a terminal allylic vinyl olefin content of at least 90%.

This invention aims to provide lubricating oil compositions excellent in low-temperature properties, oxidation stability, lubricity at high temperatures and fuel efficiency and also in handling properties at low temperatures, and a viscosity modifier for lubricating oil employable in said lubricating oil compositions. The viscosity modifier for lubricating oil comprises an ethylene/null-olefin copolymer (B) composed of: (i) ethylene, (ii) an null-olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms, and (iii) a higher null-olefin of 4 to 20 carbon atoms wherein the carbon number of (iii) is larger than that of (ii) by one or more, and the ethylene/null-olefin copolymer (B) has the following properties (b-1) and (b-2): (b-1) a content of ethylene (i) is in the range of 40 to 80% by weight, a content of the null-olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms (ii) is in the range of 15 to 59% by weight, and a content of the higher null-olefin of 4 to 20 carbon atoms (iii) is in the range of 0.1 to 25% by weight with the proviso that the sum is 100% by weight; and (b-2) a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) in terms of polystyrene as measured by GPC is between 80,000 and 400,000.

A lubricating composition comprises one or more neutral saturated organic carboxylic acid esters and a minor proportion of (a) a compound containing the group -C-S-C-or -C-Se-C- and (b) an imidazole pyrazole or a 1,2,3-triazole which has no sulphur atom in its molecule. The esters have an acidity not exceeding 1 mg. KOH/gm. and are preferably di-esters of the formula R1OOC-R-COOR2 or complex esters of the formula R2OOC-R-COOR3OOC-R-COOR1, where R is a saturated aliphatic or alicyclic C2-8 hydrocarbon radical, R1 and R2 are alkyl or alkyl-substituted alicyclic radicals of at least 4 carbon atoms, and R3 is derived from the glycol or polyglycol HO-R3-OH. The radicals R1, R2 and R3 may contain ether oxygen linkages but the esters should contain no atoms other than C, H and O. Other suitable esters may be obtained by esterifying: a dicarboxylic acid (1 mol.) with (i) a glycol (2 mols.) and a monocarboxylic acid (2 mols.); (ii) a glycol (1 mol.), a monocarboxylic acid (1 mol.) and a monohydric alcohol (1 mol.); or (iii) a hydroxy monocarboxylic acid (2 mols.) and a monohydric alcohol (2 mols.); a glycol (1 mol.) with a hydroxy monocarboxylic acid (2 mols.) and monocarboxylic acid (2 mols.); a glycol or polyglycol (1 mol.) with a monocarboxylic acid (2 mols.); or a polyhydric alcohol such as trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol completely with a monocarboxylic acid. There are several specific examples of such esters. The ester, or mixture of esters, used should have a viscosity index above 100, a pour point below -40 DEG F., a boiling (or decomposition) point above 600 DEG F. and a flash point above 350 DEG F. The preferred additives (a) are (i) di-(hydroxyaryl) thioethers as described in Specification 757,219; (ii) dibenzothiazines or dibenzoselenazines, e.g. phenothiazine, phenoselenazine, phenothiazene-3, phenothiazine-5-oxide, 10,101-diphenothiazine, 6,7-benzophenothiazine, or 3,7 difluorophenothiazine; and (iii) dialkyl selenide having at least 12 carbon atoms, e.g. dilauryl or dicetyl selenide. The additives (b) are imidazoles, pyrazoles or 1,2,3-triazoles, e.g. imidazole (glyoxaline), benzimidazole, pyrazole, benzotriazole, 2-methyl benzimidazole, 3,5-dimethyl pyrazole or indazole. The composition preferably comprises 0.05 to 5% wt. of (a) and 0.01 to 2% wt. of (b). Optional ingredients mentioned are mineral oil (up to 20% wt.); polymerized esters of acrylic and alkyl-substituted acrylic acids; other polyesters, e.g. of propylene glycol and sebacic acid; amines; neutral organic phosphate and phosphite esters; and metal petroleum sulphonates. Several tests are described to show the effect of various combinations of the additives listed above on di-(2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate, di-(3,5,5-trimethyl hexyl) sebacate and blends thereof with polynonyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl sebacate, a complex ester, and one another. Some of the tested compositions also contained calcium petroleum sulphonate and tri-m-tolyl phosphate. According to the Provisional Specification, additive (b) may be any organic heterocyclic compound containing two or three nitrogen atoms and one -C=C- linkage in a 5-membered heterocyclic ring. This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising at least about 30% by weight at least one mineral oil, having a kinematic viscosity of less than about 8 cSt at 100null C., (A) from about 15% to about 40% by weight of at least one polymer, and (B) up to about 30% by weight of at least one fluidizing agent, provided that when the fluidizing agent is a polynull-olefin is present in an amount up about 2 to about 30 cSt at 100null C., then the polynull-olefin is present in an amount up to about 12% by weight, wherein the lubricating composition has a shear loss of less than about 15% in the 20 hour taper bearing shear test. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties especially when used in combination with one or more mineral oils. In one aspect, the compositions provide improved oxidation resistance.

Disclosed is a refrigerator oil composition comprising at least one base oil selected from mineral oils and synthetic oils, and at least one polyoxyethylene-type nonionic surfactant. The composition has an excellent lubricating property, while specifically improving the lubricity between aluminium materials and steel materials. This is effective for preventing such materials from being seized and worn, and is suitable as a lubricating oil in refrigerators using hydrogen-containing Flon refrigerants, such as R134a, that do not cause environmental pollution.
