    摘要: A gasket is provided for use between a relatively cool cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and a relatively hot manifold receiving hot exhaust gases from the engine. The gasket is constructed of three plates: the center plate is formed of insulation material such as asbestos, one side plate being formed of copper or aluminum or other metal having a relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion, and the other side plate being formed of steel or stainless steel or other metal having a relatively low coefficient. The side plate with the high coefficient is placed against the engine head, and the side plate with the low coefficient is placed against the manifold, to prevent undesirable differential expansion of the side plates leading to gas leakage between the plates.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine has a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch opening. A thin wall metallic liner is positioned in the auxiliary chamber and insulated by a space or gap from the encircling walls of a water cooled cylinder head. The liner is formed in the shape of a cup and has low heat capacity so that it remains hot during operation of the engine and prevents condensation of fuel droplets in the rich mixture delivered to the auxiliary chamber. A second opening in the cup enables a spark plug to ignite the rich mixture and causes a torch flame to extend through the torch opening to ignite a lean mixture in the main chamber.

    摘要: A combustion passage interconnects a fuel ignition chamber and a combustion chamber such that compressed air within the combustion chamber is forced into the ignition chamber along with the preheated fuel, and the expansion of the burning air and fuel mixture forces the mixture through the combustion passage into the combustion chamber to complete combustion of the fuel with the air therein. The ignition chamber including the combustion passage is formed from a synthetic ceramic material which has sufficient heat insulating properties to retain the heat emitted by the combusted fuel in the engine for preheating the fuel injected into the fuel ignition chamber. At least one groove extends along the combustion passage and has a depth which increases towards the ignition chamber end. An inflexible valve member formed from a synthetic ceramic material extends from the ignition chamber into the combustion passage to close the latter while leaving the groove open. The valve member is adjusted along the axis of the combustion passage to vary the length of the groove covered by the valve member for controlling the flow restriction between the combustion chamber and the ignition chamber.

A peripheral portion of a top surface of the piston is a flat surface. A raised portion, which has a curved surface and which is a solid of revolution, is formed at a central portion of the top surface, the raised portion being joined to the flat surface of the peripheral portion via a curved surface. When the piston is positioned at a top dead center, nozzle holes of the auxiliary combustion chamber jet out flame jets to a portion at which the raised portion of the top surface of the piston and the flat surface of the peripheral portion of the top surface of the piston are joined together.
