Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to filling and lifting high altitude balloons. For instance, one example system for lifting and filling a balloon having a balloon envelope includes an apparatus for use with the balloon envelope. The apparatus includes a load line, a fill tube having a hollow portion nested within the load line and a termination member attached to the fill tube and load line. The load line is configured to lift the balloon envelope during inflation. The fill tube extends through the load line and is configured to allow lift gas to pass through the hollow portion. The termination member is configured to mate with an opening in the balloon envelope so that lift gas can pass through the hollow portion of the fill tube and into the opening in the balloon envelope.

Abstract: A method is provided of replacing a first drone base station with a second drone base station, the first drone base station, the method comprising: sending by the first drone base station first pilot signals indicating a cell identifier; receiving by the first drone base station information that the second drone base station is in the vicinity of the first drone base station; sending by the second drone base station second pilot signals which indicate the same cell identifier as the first drone base station; receiving by the first drone base station from the second drone base station an indication to cease to send first pilot signals;and dependent upon receiving by the first drone base station from the second drone base station the indication to cease to send first pilot signals, ceasing by the first drone base station the sending of first pilot signals.

Abstract: A security system includes an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) including an airframe with a power source and a propulsive system operatively mounted to the airframe for sustained, autonomous flight of the UAV. A flight control system is operatively connected to the airframe, propulsive system, and power source to control the sustained, autonomous flight of the UAV. An imaging device is mounted to the airframe. A wireless communication device is operatively connected to the imaging device to wirelessly transmit data including images from the imaging device. A remote server is operatively connected to receive the data transmitted wirelessly from the wireless communication device, wherein the remote server is operatively connected to communicate the data to emergency responders.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing broadband internet access to mobile platforms such as vehicles, aircraft, and portable devices, using a network of one or more entities such as drones/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In one embodiment, the drone communication system comprises an antenna sub-system, a radio sub-system and a data switching sub-system. The mobile platforms comprise antenna and radio sub-systems to communicate with the drones, detect changes in the mobile platforms azimuth and elevation changes, and adjust the mobile platform's antenna beam to compensate for the orientation changes to optimally point toward the drones. The exemplary mobile platform further comprises methods to detect the need for handoff to a different drone and to carry out the handoff. A mechanism to improve coverage to mobile platforms that may see obstruction on their path to the drone network is also disclosed, as are apparatus and methods for cost efficiently providing reliable internet access to portable devices.

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Network access (for example, to the Internet) may be provided by detecting a UAV and fixing one or more beams from one or more ground terminals to the UAV. In one embodiment, the detection of a UAV includes forming and pointing beams from a ground terminal and ground gateways toward the UAV. The ground terminal may be configured to autonomously steer its antenna beam during initial installation to detect the reference signal from a UAV. In one variant, the ground terminals are steered to more finely track the position of the UAV based on a signal quality metric such as received signal strength. In one embodiment, the ground terminal antenna is initially manually pointed toward the UAV, and thereafter allowed to automatically steer to track the position of the UAV.

Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure provide for methods, apparatus, and computer software for multiple access to a channel carrying a common uplink burst transmitted by users that utilize two different modes. Specifically, a coupled mode provides for range extension for users at a cell edge, while a decoupled mode provides for user data transmissions within the common uplink burst. Multiple access between these different modes may be provided in a non-orthogonal scheme by moderating the amount of interference between the respective modes. Further, multiple access between these different modes may be provided in an orthogonal scheme by utilizing interleaved frequency division multiple access (IFDMA).

Abstract: A device receives a request for a flight path from a first location to a second location in a region, and calculates the flight path based on the request and based on one or more of weather information, air traffic information, obstacle information, regulatory information, or historical information associated with the region. The device determines required capabilities for the flight path based on the request, and selects, from multiple UAVs, a particular UAV based on the required capabilities for the flight path and based on a ranking of the multiple UAVs. The device generates flight path instructions for the flight path, and provides the flight path instructions to the particular UAV to permit the particular UAV to travel from the first location to the second location via the flight path.

Abstract: A system for augmenting wireless communication and satellite positioning for machines at a worksite includes one or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) configured to be remotely operated above an area encompassing the worksite. Each of the UAV includes a real time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS) onboard the UAV for determining the position of the UAV relative to a base station located at a known location, and a machine vision module for detecting an object on the ground at the worksite. The RTK GPS onboard each UAV determines the global coordinates of the detected object in 3D space using the position of the UAV. A flight control module receives information on current position of one or more machines operating at the worksite, and machine wireless communication and satellite positioning requirements in real-time from the one or more machines, and controls flight of at least one UAV to a position where the at least one UAV can augment wireless communication signal and GPS satellite signal connectivity to meet the machine wireless communication and satellite positioning requirements.

Abstract: A solar powered aircraft having segmented wings that can be reconfigured during flight to optimize collection of solar energy are described. The aircraft have rigid construction that is resistant to inclement weather and is configured to rely on free flight control at high altitude and under conventional conditions, thereby providing flight duration in excess of 2 months. The aircraft is particularly suitable for use as part of a telecommunications network. A telecommunications network incorporating such aircraft is also discussed.
