Abstract:
Lubricants containing a compound of the structure R.sub.1 R.sub.2 N--C(X')S--(CR.sub.3 R.sub.4).sub.a Y where X' is an oxygen or sulfur atom and Y is, e.g., an activating group; also containing a phosphorus acid or ester of the formula (R.sub.6 X)(R.sub.7 X)P(X).sub.n X.sub.m R.sub.8 or an amine salt thereof; and also a surfactant, exhibit good antiwear properties. They are particularly useful in pressure transmitting applications such as tractor hydraulic fluids.
Abstract:
Gear oil compositions are described which comprise a lubricating base oil having dissolved therein:(A) at least one phosphite ester characterized by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrocarbyl based groups of from 1 to 30 carbon atoms and(B) at least one metal overbased composition.Another embodiment of the invention comprises the above-mentioned (A) and (B) with(C) a sulfurization product of an aliphatic olefinic compound containing from 3 to 30 carbon atoms.
Abstract:
The present invention is a composition having improved water tolerance properties which is adapted for use as a functional fluid or lubricating composition. The composition is comprised of a major amount of a synthetic or mineral oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of a water tolerance fix compound. The water tolerance fix compound is present in an amount which is effective to improve the water tolerance properties of the composition as a whole which amount is in the range of from about 0.1 parts by weight to about 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the oil. The water tolerance fix compound is prepared by reacting a nitrogen-containing phosphorus-free carboxylic acid (A) with an alkanol tertiary monoamine (B) to form an ester-salt reaction product. The water tolerance fix compound is present in the oil along with 5 parts by weight of water or less per 100 parts by weight of the oil.
Abstract:
A number of functional characteristics of a gear lubricant are improved by including within the lubricant an additive package comprised of (a) a treated zinc dithiophosphate and (b) an overbased carboxylate which is preferably borated. The additive preferably includes (c) an alkylamine, (d) a sulfurized olefin and (e) a polymeric foam inhibitor. The components of the package provide an interdependent synergistic improvement of numerous performance characteristics of the gear lubricant such as reducing copper strip corrosion, increasing thermal stability and reducing the amount of rust, and odor. The limited slip or anti-chatter performance of the oil is also improved.
Abstract:
Improved automatic transmission fluids (ATF's) and gear lubricant compositions comprising a low concentration of an oil-soluble transistion metal compound are provided. The transition metal compound ameliorates low temperature thickening in ATF's and high temperature thickening in gear lubricants.
Abstract:
A lubricant mixture suitable for a manual transmission fluid comprising:(a) a boronated overbased alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt selected from the group consisting of sulfonates, phenates, oxylates, carboxylates and mixtures thereof;(b) a friction modifier selected from the group consisting of fatty phosphites, fatty acid amides, borated fatty epoxides, fatty amines, glycerol esters and their borated derivatives, borated alkoxylated fatty amines, sulfurized olefins and mixtures thereof;(c) and an oil of lubricating viscosity, wherein such lubricants have excellent static and dynamic frictional characteristics. The lubricant fluids are particularly useful in reducing double detent and clashing during manual transmission shifting.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a lubricating composition comprising (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) a friction modifier; (c) a corrosion inhibitor; (d) an antiwear agent; and (e) a product prepared by heating together: (i) a dispersant; (ii) 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a hydrocarbyl-substituted 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, or oligomers thereof; (iii) a borating agent;and (iv) optionally a dicarboxylic acid of an aromatic compound selected from the group consisting of 1,3 diacids and 1,4 diacids, or (v) optionally a phosphorus acid compound, said heating being sufficient to provide a product of (i), (ii), (iii) and optionally (iv), which is soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further provides a use for the lubricating composition in a transmission.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition for a final drive axle oil comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, one or more dispersants and one or more phosphorus compounds wherein the kinematic viscosity of the lubricant composition at 100° C. is greater than 10 mm2/s and wherein the amount by weight of the dispersant is greater than the amount by weight of the phosphorus compounds and any sulfur compounds which may optionally be present.
Abstract:
Continuously variable transmissions are lubricated by supplying to the transmission a composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and an oil-soluble zinc salt containing at least one hydrocarbyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms. The amount of the zinc salt is sufficient to provide an increased steel-on-steel dynamic coefficient of friction for the composition, being at least 0.125. The composition is substantially free from thiophosphate salts and exhibits a copper corrosion rating of 1B or better (ASTM-130).
