A method of bonding two or more substrates together which comprises I. contacting the components of the composition comprising a) an organoborane/amine complex wherein the amine is selected from the group of amines having an amidine structural component; aliphatic heterocycles having at least one nitrogen in the heterocyclic ring; an alicyclic compound having bound to the ring a substituent having an amine moiety; primary amines which in addition to a primary amine have one or more hydrogen bond accepting groups of an ether, polyether, thioether or halogen wherein there is an alkylene chain of at least two carbon atoms between the primary amine and the hydrogen bond accepting group, and conjugated imines; b) one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation; and, c) optionally an effective amount of a compound which causes the complex to disassociate or heating the composition to a temperature at which the complex dissassociates; II. contacting the adhesive composition with the two or more substrates; III. positioning the two or more substrates such that the adhesive composition is located between them; and IV. allowing the adhesive to cure so as to bind the two or more substrates together.

Polymer blend compositions are prepared having excellent combinations of optical properties, physical properties and hydrolytic stability comprising, in admixture, (a) a diaryl fluorene carbonate polymer and (b) a polysulfone. Preferably, the diaryl carbonate polymer is a copolycarbonate of bisphenol A with bis(hydroxyphenyl) fluorene, preferably 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene. Optionally, the blend compositions also comprise a second non-fluorene carbonate polymer (c). Preferably, the polysulfone is a bisphenol A polysulfone or a polyether poly sulfone. In preferred aspects of this invention, the polysulfone and diaryl carbonate polymer components are selected to provide a transparent blend composition.

A process of three dimensional lithography in amorphous polymers to form an instantaneous, permanent image in the polymer by the steps of providing an undoped, non-crystalline layer or film of a polymer having a stable amorphous state under human operating conditions. The film is preferably poly(ethyleneterphthalate) (PET), poly(aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK), poly(chloro-trifluoroethylene) (Kel-F.RTM.), poly(carbonate) (ie LEXAN 9032.RTM.), poly(sulfone), poly(methylmethacrylate(PMMA, or LUCITE.RTM.), a poly(cyanurate) such as bisphenol A dicyanate, or an epoxy (eg. Epon 820.RTM.). The film can be either self supporting or mounted on a substrate. The film is then covered (and optionally contacted) with a mask which serves to block the radiation from impinging on where no marking is desired. If the mask is in actual contact with the film, it is capable of also acting as a heat sink. Next, the film is exposed through the mask to radiation of sufficient intensity to cause ablation of the exposed areas imparting a distinct, three-dimensional impression in the film. The film may then, for example, be processed by metalization and coating with a protective layer to form a finished product of an optical data storage disk.

Polymer foam is made from a two-component foam system. The foam system includes an A-side component which contains a multifunctional Michael acceptor and a blowing agent that has a boiling temperature in the range −40° C. to +100° C. The system also includes a B-side component that contains a multifunctional carbon-Michael donor, a surfactant and a blowing agent that has a boiling temperature in the range −40° C. to +100° C. The viscosities of each of the components are 2,500 cPs or lower. Foam is made by separately pressurizing the components, then separately depressurizing them so they each at least partially expand. The partially expanded materials are then combined in the presence of a carbon-Michael reaction catalyst to form a reaction mixture which is cured to form the polymer foam.

The complexes of the invention are used in polymerizable compositions, adhesive compositions and coatings compositions containing compounds having moieties which polymerize under free radical polymerization conditions.

In one embodiment the invention is a polymerizable composition comprising a) an organoborane amine complex; b) one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization; c) one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization; and d) a catalyst for the polymerization of the one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization. This composition may further comprise a compound which causes the organoborane amine complex to disassociate. In a preferred embodiment, the two part composition further comprises a compound which is reactive with both the b) one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization; and the c) one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization. This composition can be polymerized by contacting the two parts of the composition. In another embodiment the invention is an organoborane amine complex comprising an alkyl borane having ligands which are alkyl, cycloalkyl or both and an amino siloxane.
