An apparatus and a method for controlling a degree of attrition or wear of a sealing screw conveying plasticized material are provided. The apparatus includes an opening which intersects the wall of a housing of the screw in the region of the screw threads or in the region immediately neighboring the screw threads. Another opening intersects the wall of the housing. The two openings are spaced apart axially from each other and the pressure sensors connected to both openings. The process involved conveys a plasticized material against a resistance, the resistance being a sealing screw bearing supported within the screw housing. The pressure of the conveyed material is measured at two locations spaced apart from each other in the direction of conveyance. The two locations are disposed on both sides of a resistance body towards which the sealing screw conveys the material. The difference between the two measured values is used to indicate the degree of wear of the screw or its housing, respectively.

The melt to be filtered is supplied to these filter disks (5,6) via an upstream channel (19). The impurities gathering on the upstream side of the filter disks (5,6) are continuously scraped off by a scraper (8) that carries a plurality of scraper elements (10) disposed along curved lines spaced apart from each other so that they convey the impurities towards the center of the filter disks (5,6). There, the impurities reach a conveyance channel (22) in which they are conveyed off by at least one worm (23,24).

An apparatus for pre-treatment of thermoplastic synthetic plastics material, for example polyester waste, comprises at least two receptacles (1,13) disposed in series following each other, in each one of which receptacles a comminuting or mixing tool (5) rotates around a vertical axis (4) in the bottom region of the receptacle (1 or 13). At least the downstream receptacle has an evacuation line (18) through which, optionally also a protective gas can be introduced. The receptacles (1,13) are connected to each other by a tube piece (12) in which a shut-off means (20) is disposed so that the vacuum in the downstream receptacle (13) can be maintained without any problem until the shut-off valve (20) is opened, whereupon the vacuum in the receptacle (13) sucks on the material positioned in the upstream receptacle (1). Therefore, in the upstream receptacle (1)--when seen in flowing direction of the synthetic plastics material--the synthetic plastics material is pre-comminuted, pre-heated, pre-dried and pre-compressed, what is still assisted by the turbulence when sucked-in into the downstream receptacle (13). In such a manner, completely homogeneous material is conveyed by a worm (16) connected to the last receptacle (13) to further processing (FIG. 1).

An apparatus for processing thermoplastic synthetic plastic material to be recycled comprises a first receptacle (1) and a second receptacle (2) for the material to be processed. Within both receptacles (1, 2) tools (21) for mixing and heating the material circulate around a vertical axis each. The material reaches the second receptacle (2) which is connected to an evacuating means (9), from the first receptacle (1) through a connecting conduit (3). The first receptacle (1) has above it an intake opening (19) for the material to be processed, and the mouth of the connecting conduit (3) in the second receptacle (2) is disposed at a higher level than the tools (21) circulating in this receptacle (2). The material processed is carried off the second receptacle (2) through a discharge opening (49) by means of at least one screw (47), whereby this receptacle is vacuum-tightly closed. A sluice (6) is connected to the intake opening (19) of the first receptacle (1) that also is connected to an evacuating means (9). In both receptacles (1, 2) at least two tools (21) each circulate in different levels, disposed one upon the other, wherein the intake opening (19) in the first receptacle (1) is disposed higher than the uppermost tools (21) circulating in this receptacle (1). The discharge opening (49) of the second receptacle (2) is disposed at least substantially at the level of the lowermost tools (21) circulating in this receptacle (2). In each one of the two receptacles (1, 2) at least one temperature sensor (32) is provided for each plane of the circulating tools (21), which sensor is disposed higher than its associated plane.

A backflushable filtering apparatus for a molten material, particularly for a plastic melt, comprises a housing (1) in which a sieving arrangement (17) is provided which includes at least two sieving sections (16) separated from one another. The melt to be filtered is supplied to the sieving sections (16) through at least one distributor (3). The distributor (3) includes at least one control body (9) for backflushing which is moveable within a housing (53) that is provided with an inlet opening (4) for the material to be filtered. The control body (9), in a filtering position, unblocks the influx of material to be filtered to all sieving sections (16) through connection channels (23). However, in a backflushing position, the control body (9) interrupts the influx of material to the filtering section (16) to be backflushed and interconnects the connection channel (23) of the sieving section (16) flushed back with a discharge channel (28) located in the control body (9). At least the majority of the circumference of the control body (9) is surrounded by a distribution space (7) for the material to be filtered which is situated within its housing (53). The distribution space (7) is connectable through the connection channels (23) to all sieving sections (16) in communication with the distributor (3). Guiding channels (6) lead from the inlet opening (4) to the regions of the two front ends (61, 62) of the distribution space (7). These front ends (61, 62) are situated in the region of the outermost connection channels (23) or outside the region of all connection channels (23). The discharge channel (28), which leads away from the control body (9), may be caused to communicate with the connection channel (23) of the respective sieving section (16) to be flushed back through a flush back channel (27) of at least one cross-piece (14) of the control body (9) which overbridges the distribution space (7).

Further moved tools (12), which convey the material into the discharge opening (15), are provided in the receiving container (1) below the carrier disc (9). The carrier disc (9) comprises at least one aperture (36) which connects the space (26) above the carrier disc to the space (10) below it, in order to divert water vapour and/or gaseous substances out of the space (10). The apertures (36) are situated close to the axis (8) and close to the trailing edges (37) of the tools (21) during the rotation of the carrier disc (9).

On the upstream side of this closure means (30) a storage space (36) for material to be cleaned is connected to the upstream conduit (3). Within this storage space (36) a piston (38) is sealingly guided, which is reciprocable by a drive means and closes in its projected position the storage space (36) against the upstream conduit (3).

At least one scraper (26) mounted in the housing (1) engages the upstream side of the filter (40) and strips off coarse impurities from the filter when the filter (40) is rotated and conveys the impurities into a collecting space (27) that is in connection with the interior of the housing.

For backwashing the screen nest, the screen nest is in connection with a washing channel in a washing position of the screen carrier member In order to make the washing process quickly, effectively and uniformly over the surface of the screen and in order to avoid an additional loss of the mass in the main flow at the backwashing process, a storage space is provided in the screen carrier member which is filled in normal operation with cleaned melt. A piston in the storage space is shifted for moving the material provided in the storage space in the backwashing direction through the screen nest and into the washing channel.
