    摘要: A method of forming a multilayer coating on a substrate utilizes a pigmented aqueous based coating composition. The aqueous based coating composition contains a polymeric film-forming resin and as an additive from about 1 to about 40 percent by weight based on the resin solids of the composition of an oligomeric ester having an acid value of from about 100 to about 500 of the structure: ##STR1## where X is the residue of a polyol containing from 1 to 50 carbon atoms per hydroxyl group after reaction with an acid or an anhydride, R is an organic moiety from the acid or anhydride and A has an average value of about 2 or greater. The coating compositions are particularly advantageous as metallic pigmented coating compositions for automotive basecoat applications because they exhibit excellent resistance to mottling, have good flop and have reduced sensitivity to fluctuations in relative humidity.

    摘要: Quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers and their use in cationic electrodeposition are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are particularly useful as feed resins for controlling the pH of aqueous dispersions of acidified cationic resins used in electrodeposition. Upon electrodeposition, such resins generate acid which can build up to undesirable levels in the electrodeposition bath. The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are strong bases and when fed into the bath react with the acid to form the corresponding quaternary ammonium salt. This controls the pH of the bath at acceptable levels and provides additional cationic resin for electrodeposition. Utilizing the invention in this manner minimizes the need for controlling acid build-up in the electrodeposition bath by conventional techniques such as by treating the bath with ultrafiltration or electrodialysis.The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are also useful as electrodeposition resins themselves in that they electrodeposit without generating acid counter ion.

    摘要: Disclosed is an ungelled, modified chlorinated polyolefin resin suitable for providing a highly adherent, solvent resistant film on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate. The modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is prepared by grafting an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated acid anhydride onto a chlorinated polyolefin resin to form an acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin. The resulting acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is reacted with an organic monohydric alcohol to form an esterified product containing acid functionality. The resulting esterified product is reacted with a polyepoxide to form the ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin.Also disclosed is a method of preparing an ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin of the invention, a coating composition containing a resin of the invention, and a method of forming a hardened film from the coating composition on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate.

    摘要: A composition comprising a chlorinated polyolefin and an optical brightener is disclosed. The compositions are useful as detectable adhesion promoters for polyolefin substrates. The compositions are applied as a coating to the polyolefin substrate and the coated substrate exposed to an ultraviolet light source to determine uniformity of the coating over the substrate. Uniform coverage is necessary to develop optimum adhesion between the substrate and a subsequently applied paint layer.

    摘要: Carboxylated amide polymers and coating compositions containing same are especially useful for the coating of food and beverage containers. The carboxylated amide polymers are the reaction product of (1) a compound of formula: ##STR1## wherein A is the organic residue resulting from a ring opening reaction of a 1,2-epoxy group on a polyepoxide with ammonia or amine, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1-4 alkyl group, R.sub.2 is a C.sub.2-12 alkylene group, x is 0 or 1, y is from 0 to 4, R.sub.3 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1-6 alkyl group, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1-6 alkyl group, provided at least one R.sub.1, R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 is hydrogen, and n is at least 1.0 with (2) a cyclic anhydride of a dibasic carboxylic acid. The carboxylated amide polymers can be made water reducible by neutralizing the polymer with an organic or inorganic base and used in aqueous coating compositions.

    摘要: Cured coatings having a high degree of extensibility and other desirable properties are obtained from compositions comprising a hydroxyl-containing, urethane reaction product containing a polyester component and an amine-aldehyde resin. Preferred compositions contain a polymeric polyol of low glass transition temperature. These compositions are storage-stable in one package, and the cured coatings are adherent, durable and highly extensible. These coatings are particularly useful on resilient and rubbery substrates, such as form rubber, polyurethane foam and vinyl foam, and on soft metal surfaces such as mild steel and aluminum.
