Beams from the two light sources, incident on the material, generate sum frequency light of these beams. The nonlinear optical material is provided with a periodic structure that matches phases of the beams from the two light sources with a phase of the sum frequency light of these beams. Also, wavelengths of the beams from the two light sources and of the sum frequency light of these beams, polarization directions of these three beams in the material, and propagation directions of these three beams in the material are determined such that an efficiency of conversion into sum frequency light does not change even with a change in one of the defining parameters, thus providing an advantageous pumping light source.

In a multi-wavelength light detecting and/or emitting apparatus, there are provided of a first unit of a first directional coupler having a grating for an optical coupling function and a photodetector having a photoelectric conversion function and a second unit of a second directional coupler having a grating for an optical coupling function and a semiconductor laser, and a common light waveguide extending parallel with the unit in a light propagating direction. The first directional coupler and the photodetector are serially arranged in the light propagating direction and parallel with the common light waveguide, and the second directional coupler and the semiconductor laser are serially arranged in the light propagating direction and parallel with the common light waveguide. When there are formed a plurality of the first units and the gratings have different pitches, wavelength multiplexed light signals can be simultaneously detected per each wavelength with an equal detection performance. When there are formed a plurality of the second units and the gratings have different pitches, laser lights of different wavelengths can be emitted from a single emission end of the common waveguide and the semiconductor lasers can be independently driven.

The image projecting apparatus includes the DBR semiconductor laser which is provided with a phase region and a DBR region, a light wavelength converting device for converting fundamental-wave light emitted from the DBR semiconductor laser into second harmonic wave light, an optical deflector for scanning the second harmonic wave in a one-dimensional or two-dimensional manner, and a modulating portion for modulating the DBR semiconductor laser based on an image signal. In the control method, a coefficient calculating step and a wavelength adjusting step are performed within a non-drawing time during which a drawing signal, which corresponds to the image signal, is absent. In the coefficient calculating step, at least one coefficient in a relationship between a DBR current to be injected into the DBR region and a phase current to be injected into the phase region for continuously shifting the wavelength of the fundamental-wave light is calculated. In the wavelength adjusting step, the DBR current injected into the DBR region and the phase current injected into the phase region are changed based on the relationship such that the second harmonic wave light is adjusted.
