摘要: Improvements in manufacturing composite material articles. The use of male molds in forming such articles has the problem of requiring large tolerances for the outer dimensions of the articles. The use of female molds has the problem of inaccurate forming of highly contoured inner surfaces. The invention produces an accurately formed inner surface by molding material against a male mold, and outer dimensions within close tolerances by curing the material in a female mold. A male caul (34) is positioned on a male mold (30). A preplied stack (32) of composite material is supported on a blanket (36) and held in position against caul (34) with caul (34) and mold (30) in an inverted position. Stack (32) is heated. A vacuum causes blanket (36) to mold stack (32) against caul (34). Mold (30) is rotated 180.degree., and stack (32) is allowed to cool. A female mold surface (43) is placed into contact with formed stack (32). Male mold (30) is moved away, leaving caul (34 ) and formed stack (32) in female mold (42). Stack (32) is cured in female mold (42), preferably by a vacuum bagging operation.

摘要: A flow molding process and associated molding apparatus for making plastic parts or pieces utilizing a radio frequency heating fluid. The molding apparatus includes a pair of spaced electrodes, at least one of which supports a molding material which may be in the form of an imprinted diaphragm (mold) for forming an imprint on at least one side of the plastic piece being fabricated. The apparatus is, in particular, employed for forming pieces having different thicknesses throughout, the purpose being to provide uniform heating throughout the piece being fabricated regardless of the varying thicknesses thereof. This is accomplished by maintaining the capacitance constant throughout all different thickness sections of the piece. This may be accomplished by equalizing the dielectric constants between the thermoplastic or the like material and the diaphragm (mold) material. In another version of the invention the capacitance is equalized by altering the spacing between the main electrodes in the different thickness sections.

摘要: A three-dimensional flow molding process and associated molding apparatus for making plastic parts or pieces utilizing a radio frequency heating field and means for applying constant pressure, along with an even temperature gradient, to the plastic part. In the process two metallic mold halves are joined clamping therebetween an imprinted diaphragm having the plastic on one side thereof between the diaphragm and one of the mold halves. In one version which may be preferred in constructing planar (two-dimensional) pieces or parts, pressure is applied directly by closing the mold halves and the diaphragm has a constant thickness therealong to provide even heating of the plastic that is being molded. In another version of the invention preferably for molding three-dimensional parts, a liquid conductor, such as mercury, or a sodium or graphite solution extends about the other side of the diaphragm in a space provided in one of the mold halves. In this version each of the mold halves is preferably provided with means for cooling. After the plastic, which may be in many different forms, is in place and the mold has been closed, the field may be applied for, for example, 5 seconds. The pressure on the mercury is maintained for the initial 5 second interval and for an additional like interval to produce a part of high quality having an excellent and consistent imprint from the diaphragm.
