A substance for coating metal surfaces, comprising organic resin components that are dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent, or solvent mixture, having at least the following organic resin components: a) epoxy resin, present as polyether comprising hydroxyl groups, based on a bisphenol epichlorohydrin polycondensation product, b) blocked aliphatic polyisocyanate, c) unblocked aliphatic polyisocyanate, d) at least one reaction component, selected from polyesters comprising hydroxyl groups and poly(meth)acrylates comprising hydroxyl groups. The substance may also comprise at least one conductivity pigment. The invention further provides a method for coating a sheet metal with this substance, the respectively coated sheet metal, and the use thereof.

The invention provides high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that have improved moisture barrier properties and/or anti-corrosive properties and a means to obtain the high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that eliminates/minimizes the need for process solvents. A hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent, epoxy pre-polymer and ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as an alternative to organic solvent, are combined to yield an epoxy pre-polymer-monomer-hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent blend, which may be blended with other coating components and additives. The resulting blend is then dispersed in water with surfactant and the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized (in the presence of other formulation components) to yield a dispersion. The dispersion may then be used as one component of a coating formulation. The coating formulation can then be applied to materials and cured to form a final coating.

These adducts are useful in the preparation of polyurethanes.

Cationic paint binders based on polyether urethanes are formed by selective reaction of one NCO-group of a diisocyanate which contains NCO-groups of different reactivities with the primary hydroxyl groups of a polyhydroxypolyether in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo-2,2,2-octane (DABCO) as catalyst, and subsequently reacting the remaining NCO-group of the diisocyanate with the secondary amine. The binders which are largely free of low molecular basic by-products are used for formulating paints, particularly cathodically depositable electrodeposition paints, which are water-dilutable after protonation.

Crosslinking cationic paint binders, preferably cathodically depositable paint binders comprising (poly)-2-hydroxyalkylurea compounds as a crosslinking agent are described. The 2-hydroxyalkylureas are obtained by reacting organic polyisocyanates with secondary beta-hydroxyalkylamines. The crosslinking agents of the invention permit film formation in the stoving range of about 140.degree. C., which is particularly favorable for water-based paints. Additionally, selective semi-blocking which is made possible through the difference in reactively between the NCO-groups of individual polyisocyanates is enhanced through use of the secondary amino groups, in comparison to through use of hydroxyl groups which are conventionally used.

A one-can heat-curable resin composition which comprises: (1) a polyester polyol having at least three functional groups; (2) an adduct of an epoxy resin having at least one secondary hydroxyl group with a lactone compound or an alkylene oxide; and (3) a blocked organic polyisocyanate or a product of blocking of a prepolymer having terminal NCO groups obtained by reacting an organic polyisocyanate and an active hydrogen-containing compound, gives a tough and durable coat film showing no yellowing or thermal degradation due to heating at all.Furthermore, said film has a high hardness and is excellent in processability and staining resistance, particularly in mustard staining resistance. In particular, the composition, when used in the production of precoated metal, gives good coated steel sheets, which can be advantageously used in manufacturing household electric appliances and so on.
