Abstract:
A broadcast network 1 is described in which to improve network efficiency and quality of service, a particular transmitter 11a within the network 1 is selected to transmit content to a particular, preferably mobile terminal 3. The selection of the transmitter 11a is carried out by reference to information available in a second network 27, the user of the terminal 3 having a further terminal 12 connected to the second network 27 and either integrated with or in close proximity to their mobile terminal 3.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for adaptive broadcast transmission. A broadcast transmission can be received. Insufficiency of a broadcast channel quality can be determined. A negative acknowledgement signal can be sent on a common uplink channel in response to determining the broadcast channel quality is insufficient. The negative acknowledgement signal can be received on the common uplink channel at another location, the negative acknowledgement signal indicating broadcast channel quality is insufficient. The broadcast channel quality can be adjusted in response to receiving the negative acknowledgement signal.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and a system for communicating with the Internet, whereby at least one communication network and one radio system is used for a connection between a terminal and the Internet. The radio system allows the transmission of selected information available on the Internet. On the user side, a terminal is provided which comprises a communication device for communicating with the Internet via a communication network and devices for receiving and processing the Internet information transmitted by the radio system.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for personal multimedia-program recording incorporating a plurality of power-saving states/modes. Disclosed herein is an electronic device adapted to prompt an end-user to provide instructions by selecting options for requesting a particular multimedia-program, recording the multimedia-program, storing the multimedia-program, and initiating playback of the multimedia-program. The electronic devices may be adapted to determine whether an end-user is physically present when the electronic device is in operation.

Abstract:
The protection of data against illicit transfer with respect to specific data can be ensured. An integrated receiver decoder determines whether or not ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) data requiring authentication is contained in selected piece-of-music data in accordance with determination data added into transmitted data. When ATRAC data requiring authentication is contained, the integrated receiver decoder performs an authentication process between it and a storage which is a transfer destination of the ATRAC data, and performs downloading of the ATRAC data after confirming that the storage is a valid apparatus to which the downloading may be performed.
Abstract:
A webpad and method for using the same are provided. In one embodiment, information is determined about primary content being played on an audiovisual device using a computer system. Ancillary data is obtained relating to the primary content based on the information about the primary content. The ancillary data is automatically sent to the webpad for access therefrom as the primary content is being played on the audiovisual device.
Abstract:
A system of distributing video and/or audio information employs digital signal processing to achieve high rates of data compression. The compressed and encoded audio and/or video information is sent over standard telephone, cable or satellite broadcast channels to a receiver specified by a subscriber of the service, preferably in less than real time, for later playback and optional recording on standard audio and/or video tape.
Abstract:
A broadcasting system for providing access information of a broadcast service, wherein a transmission apparatus generates the access information for at least one of a broadcast network and an interaction network, from which the broadcast service is transmitted, and transmits the access information to a terminal via a specific communication network. A reception apparatus receives the access information of the broadcast service via the communication network, analyzes the received access information to determine a network from which the broadcast service is provided, among the broadcast network and the interaction network, and sets an access address for reception of the broadcast service.
Abstract:
Music is blanket transmitted to each customer's computer-based user station. Customers preselect from a list of available music in advance using an interactive screen selector, and pay only for music that they choose to have recorded for unlimited playback. An antipiracy “ID tag” is woven into the recorded music so that any illegal copies therefrom may be traced to the purchase transaction. Music is transmitted on a fixed schedule or through an active scheduling process that monitors music requests from all or a subset of satellite receivers and adjust scheduling according to demand for various CD's. In those instances where transmission interruptions result in data loss, the system downloads the next transmission of the requested CD and uses both transmissions to produce a “good copy”. In conjunction to the blanket transmission, an automated CD manufacturing facility may be provided to manufacture CD's and distribute them by ground transportation.
