A hydraulic parking brake with an electric actuator is provided for an automotive vehicle and is adapted for use with a hydraulic brake system in the vehicle. A manually operated switch engages an electric motor which drives a ram to increase hydraulic pressure to force the caliper pads or brake shoes of a brake into engagement with a brake disk or drum. The electric motor is equipped with associated limit switches, which disengage the motor following operation to prescribed limits. A torsion spring is part of the mechanism that activates the hydraulic master cylinder. This spring holds hydraulic pressure within a range of pressure values adequate to hold the brake and still avoid damage to the brake components. This ensures that the electric motor can travel far enough to activate the limit switches.

The actuating unit comprises an electric motor and at least one reduction gear operatively arranged between the electric motor and the first friction lining. The reduction gear is formed as a threaded drive which, for guiding the threaded nut, includes a cylindrical guide piece that is provided with a sensor device for sensing the reaction force. To realize a design suitable for large series production, the invention discloses that the guide piece has a reduced thickness of material or an aperture in the area of attachment of the sensor device, and a prefabricated sensor module that allows testing outside the guide piece and forms the sensor device is arranged in the area of attachment or within or above the aperture.

An electrically powered actuator mechanism for operating a vehicle parking brake including a reversible electrical motor having output gearing driving a sector gear. A wrapped spring clutch drivingly connects the sector gear to an intermediate operator cable wind up wheel. The intermediate cable is connected to the brake cable to set the brakes when the operator cable is wound up by energization of the motor in one direction, with a load sensor turning off the motor when a predetermined tension load is reached. Locking motor gearing holds the brake in the set condition. Reversal of the motor unwinds the cable to release the parking brake. A self adjusting feature is provided by a pretensioned clock spring creating a torsional bias on the wind up wheel tending to maintain a predetermined tension in the brake cable. A spring clutch is released by engagement of a release arm to allow the clock spring to adjust the wind up wheel. A cable operated manual release causes a release lever to engage the clutch spring release arm to allow the cable to release although the clock spring maintains a minimum tension after release of the wind up wheel.
