The invention relates to a read-write optical memory comprising a plurality of juxtaposed memory cells (11), each receiving a respective light beam (3). Each memory cell contains a storage medium (10), which includes a storage element (23) having stable optical states. The storage element (23) is divided into a number of memory points, and the optical state in a given memory point can be both changed and read by means of a light beam (3) directed towards the memory point. The memory can be implemented entirely without any movable mechanical parts and has a very short read-write time and an exceptionally high storage capacity. Parallel writing and reading of multibit words is possible.

A compact optical memory in which data is stored in an optical data layer capable of selectively altering light such as by changeable transmissivity, reflectivity, polarization, and/or phase. The data is illuminated by controllable light sources and an array of multi-surface diffractive imaging lenslets cause a data image to be projected onto an array of light sensors by reflecting, hence folding the image rays, by means of a mirror that both reflects and optically modifies the light rays to redirect them onto the sensor array located substantially coplanar with the data layer. Data is organized into an annular array of patches (called pages). By selective illumination of each data page, one of the lenslets images the selected data page onto a central image plane where the sensor array is located. Light in the data image pattern strikes different ones of the arrayed light sensors, thereby outputting a pattern of binary bits in the form of electrical data signals. By selectively and sequentially illuminating different ones of the data regions (pages) on the data layer, correspondingly different data patterns are imaged by the corresponding lenslets onto the common sensor array, thereby enabling many stored data images to be retrieved by multiplexing at electro-optical speed.

An optical information processor for use as a matrix vector multiplier comprises a vector input spatial light modulator (1) and an optically addressed weight matrix spatial light modulator (3). A read beam (10) passes through the input modulator (1) and the weight modulator and onto a combined output transducer and error spatial light modulator (5). The error modulator (5) is then controlled in accordance with the difference between a target output vector and the output vector from the transducer (5), and modulates an update beam (11) which then passes through the input modulator (1) and onto the weight modulator (3). The weight modulator (3) represents a two-dimensional array of optical attenuation values which are updated in accordance with the optical radiation incident thereon during updating.

An impedance having a constant electrostatic capacitance and a variable resistance is connected to one of the transparent conductive films. Further, an electric pulse source is connected across the transparent conductive films through the impedance. When a pulse from the pulse source is applied to the transparent conductive films, light transmittance of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is set at different levels depending on the resistance of the impedance. Thus, the resistance of the impedance is memorized in the form of the light transmittance of the ferroelectric liquid crystal. The impedance can be in the form of a photoconductive film attached to the molecular oriented film.

A dielectric layer may be further disposed at least on one side of the transparent substrate or the reflecting metal layer with respect to the recording layer and the reproducing layer. The order of the recording layer and the reproducing layer may be replaced by each other.
