    Abstract: Fatty esters of oligoesters of a dicarboxylic acid and a polyol retaining at least one free hydroxyl group, particularly of the formula (I): R1—[OR2O—C(O)—R3—(O)C—]m—R4 (I), where R1 is H, a monocarboxylic acid group, or R6O—[C(O)—R3—(O)C]—; R2s are residues of polyols having at least one substituent free hydroxyl; R3s are hydrocarbylene; R4 is —OH, —OM where M is a salt forming metal, amine or ammonium, —OR6, or —OR2O—R7; R5 is C7 to C21 hydrocarbyl; R6 is C8 to C22 hydrocarbyl; R7 is H, or —C(O)R5; and m is 1 to 20; provided that at least one of R1 and R4 is or includes a C8 to C22 group, are surfactants. A range of surfactant properties can be obtained by varying the molecules within these ranges. Especially where R2 is derived from a higher polyol e.g. sorbitol, R3 is C2 to C6, and the fatty terminal group is C8 to C14, the products can be highly water soluble and effective oil in water emulsifiers.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an aqueous fuel composition having a homogeneous liquid phase, a so called microemulsion, containing a liquid hydrocarbon fraction, ethanol and an additive with an emulsifying and solubilizing ability. The composition contains a) 70-95% by weight of an hydrocarbon fraction having a boiling point within the range from 130 to 425° C., b) 2-25% by weight of ethanol, c) 0.002-0.8% by weight of water, and d) 0.2-25% by weight of an additive comprising 5-100% by weight of an nitrogen-containing surractant, such as an amine surfactant, an ether amine surfactant, an amine oxide surfactant and an amido surfactant, and optionally an alcohol having a hydrocarbon group of 5-24 carbon atoms. Preferably the additive contains 5-90% by weight of the nitrogen-containing surfactant and 10-95% by weight of the alcohol. The composition, which can be stored for long periods. may be used as a fuel in diesel engines.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a feedstock composition for increasing the efficiency of atomization in hydrocarbon processing that includes a water-in-hydrocarbon oil emulsion including a non-ionic surfactant capable of stabilizing the emulsion and having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of greater than about 12. The emulsion includes water droplets of about 5 to about 10 microns in diameter, the droplets being dispersed substantially uniformly in the hydrocarbon oil phase. These surfactants are capable of stabilizing the water-in-hydrocarbon oil emulsion under relevant temperature and pressure conditions for hydrocarbon processing. The inventive feedstock composition provides a metastable water-in-oil emulsion where expanding water vapor explodes under spray conditions where the system pressure is released, demolishing a larger oil droplet and producing smaller oil droplets.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an emulsion composition containing (a) a first phase with (i) an oil soluble inert medium; and (ii) an emulsifier capable of forming a water-in-oil emulsion; and (b) a second phase with (i) a metal base; (ii) an aqueous medium; and (iii) optionally a compound containing two or more hydroxyl groups, wherein a base in the form of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate; or combinations thereof; and wherein the emulsion composition has a flow rate through a 45 μm filter of more than 8 ml/min in a filterability test carried out at ambient temperature and 45 kPa applied vacuum; wherein the filter has diameter of 5 cm and a mesh size of about 45 μm; and wherein the oil soluble inert medium in the filtration test is an oil of lubricating viscosity of a SAE 50 base oil. The invention further provides a method of preparing the emulsion composition and its use in a marine engine.
