Abstract:
A method and system for controlling the fabrication of an optical device having a given property at a defined wavelength. The method comprises the steps of providing a substrate, depositing a material on the substrate to form a film thereon, and controlling a set of manufacturing parameters as the film is being formed on the substrate to make the optical device. The method comprises the further steps of generating an optical signal having a given wavelength, dithering the wavelength of the optical signal, and applying the dithered optical signal to the film being formed on the substrate to modulate the optical signal. A correlation signal is generated to represent the difference between the given wavelength and the defined wavelength, and that correlation signal is used to adjust at least one of the manufacturing parameters to make the optical device with said given property at the defined wavelength.
Abstract:
A set of interlocking modules supports and connects a die containing lasers, a set of precision molded lenses and a set of beam switching elements. Another embodiment of the invention is a structure for mounting a logic chip and an optical chip on a chip carrier, with the optical chip being mounted on the side of the carrier facing the system board on which the carrier is mounted, so that radiation travels in a straight path from optical sources on the optical chip into optical transmission guides on the board.
Abstract:
A system and method for precisely controlling the wavelength selective function provided by fiber Bragg gratings in optical fiber elements. The system and method exploits a wavelength-locked loop servo-control circuit and methodology that enables real time adjustment of the grating pattern being written to said fiber optical link element by a grating writing source to thereby mutually align a center wavelength of the peaked wavelength selective function resulting from the grating pattern with a center wavelength of the optical signal transmitted over a communication channel provided by the fiber. A real-time adaptive dispersion compensation technique for optical fibers is additionally provided that exploits the wavelength-locked loop servo-control circuit. In the adaptive compensation system, a tunable Bragg grating pattern is re-written to the fiber optical link element by a grating writing source under control of the wavelength-locked loop servo-control circuit in order to mutually align a center wavelength of the peaked wavelength selective function resulting from the grating pattern with a center wavelength of an optical signal to be transmitted over the channel.
Abstract:
A method for writing information on a laser writable recording blank with reference tracks utilizes a split laser beam. A first of these beams is used for writing while the second is directed to a mirror or similar device which causes the second beam to move across a track edge in an oscillatory manner. The laser light reflected in this process is converted to an electrical signal which is analyzed to determine very precisely the distance between the track edge and the point of impingement of the first beam on the disk. Power in this first beam is then controlled so as to write information on the disk. The precise control allows a plurality of information tracks to be written between adjacent reference track portions.
Abstract:
In a system for writing a plurality of information tracks between adjacent portions of a reference track on a rotatable medium, advantage is taken of the fact that laser beam dithering a cross an edge of a reference track produces signals which are analyzable to determine much more exact radial positions. Reading of a certain number, N, of bits during a known period of time, T, permits the determination of the linear or angular velocity of the disk. Knowledge of this value permits its much more precise control.
Abstract:
A method is provided for determining, and thus controlling, vertical alignment of a laser beam used to read and/or write data from or to a rotatable information storage medium, such as a CD-ROM or CD-ROM-like disk. For a period of time, light from the laser is made to impinge on the medium from slightly different directions. The reflected light is analyzed using frequency doubling principles to determine when the light beam is most nearly perpendicular to the medium.
Abstract:
Laser light is focused in an accurate manner on selected layers in a multilayer optical disk recording system by means of an analysis of output electrical signals from a dithered source which results in the production of an electrical signal which is proportional to an amount by which the parts of the system are to be relatively moved in order to achieve the desired focus on one of the layers.

Variable time-delay means is provided for a computer clock system or other microwave applications.
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to a new interface and a method for making the same, and more particularly, to an optical fiber interface and a method for making the same. On a substrate having semiconductors, a receiver/transmitter connection is provided to interface with an optical fiber. Integral means for the fiber alignment, support and transit through a sealed environment is also provided. The substrate having the receiver/transmitter secured to it with the optical fiber end, is then enclosed in a housing.
