    Abstract: This disclosure relates to a biosensor for detecting a target analyte in a sample comprising a first and second photoelectrode each comprising conductive substrate and photoactive material, a first and second capture probe functionalized on the first and second photoelectrode, respectively, and optionally one or more reporter moieties comprising a detectable label, wherein the first and second capture probe each, independently, provides a distance between the detectable label and the photoactive material in the presence of the target analyte, wherein intensity of detection signal dictated by the distance is generated from the first and second photoelectrode by transfer of electrons between the detectable label and the photoactive material, wherein a higher, or higher increase than in absence of sample, in the intensity of the detection signal from the first as compared to the second photoelectrode in the presence of the sample, is indicative of the presence of the target analyte.

    Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an assay that measures the level of factor Xa inhibitors in a sample by detecting residual factor Xa activity. In particular, the assay utilizes a mutant variant of prothrombin that lacks proteolytic activity; a prothrombinase complex mixture; and a thrombin-specific inhibitor and measures the factor Xa activity.

    Abstract: A difference frequency generation optical transmitter and sum frequency generation optical receiver operating in the mid-infrared wavelength range for use in free space optical satellite communications are described. By using mid-infrared light, the transmitter/receiver can mitigate atmospheric scintillation, scattering, and other non-ideal optical effects in the communication channel. This is achieved through the use of nonlinear optical crystals designed for difference frequency generation in the case of the transmitter and sum frequency generation for the receiver. High-speed modulated communication signals can thus be frequency converted to the mid-infrared wavelength range by a relatively low cost, compact and high-power optical communication system.

    Abstract: A method of detecting the expression level of miRNA markers in a biological sample obtained from a mammal is provided. The method incudes the steps of i) detecting the expression level of one or more miRNA markers selected from the group of miR-199a-3p, miR-143-3p, miR-340-5p, let-7b-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-17-5p, miR-20a-5p and miR-103a-3p, in the biological sample; ii) detecting the expression level of at least one miRNA reference marker selected from miR-148b-3p and miR-30e-5p in the biological sample; and iii) normalizing the expression level of the miRNA marker(s) against the expression level of the miRNA reference marker in the sample and in a control. The method is useful for the diagnosis of endometriosis, monitoring of patient response to treatment, and assessment of disease progression and/or severity.

    Abstract: A chromatography device for removing a solute from a fluid is provided. The device has a first plate having an inlet and a first channel. The first channel directs the fluid from the inlet towards chromatographic media housed in a chamber coupled to the first plate. The chamber has a leading edge for receiving the fluid from the first channel and a trailing edge for delivering the fluid to a second channel. The chromatographic media is configured to remove the solute from the fluid as the fluid passes through the chamber. The device also has a second plate coupled to the chamber having the second channel and an outlet. The second channel directs the fluid from the chamber to the outlet. The direction of flow of fluid through the first channel and the second channel is transverse to a direction of flow of the fluid through the chromatographic media. A method of removing a solute from a fluid is also provided.
