    摘要: A technique for performing layer 2 processing is described. In a method implementation of this technique, at least one first RLC SDU is created from one or more first RLC PDUs. It is assumed here that the first RLC SDU belongs to an incomplete RLC SDU set that is to comprise at least one second RLC SDU, and that the second RLC SDU is to be created from at least one second RLC PDU not yet available. In a next step, a first PDCP function is applied to the first RLC SDU to create a data packet. The RLC function is only performed after the second RLC PDU has become available (or after an RLC time-out). Then, after the RLC function has been performed, the data packet is released to a second PDCP function.

    摘要: A distributed memory architecture for a layer 2 processing circuit chip (50) is described. In one implementation, the layer 2 processing circuit chip (50) comprises an external memory interface configured to provide access to data packets stored in an external memory (52), a layer 2 processor (54) coupled to the external memory interface (56) and configured to process data packets retrieved from the external memory (56) to generate RLC SDUs, and an on-chip memory (58) coupled to the layer 2 processor (54) and configured to store the RLC PDUs generated by the layer 2 processor (54) prior to their transmission. Upon a request to retransmit an RLC PDU, the layer 2 processor (54) is configured to selectively read the RLC PDU to be retransmitted from the on-chip memory (58) or a data packet comprising the RLC PDU to be retransmitted from the external memory (52). In the latter case, the layer 2 processor (54) is further configured to re-generate the RLC PDU to be retransmitted from the data packet read from the external memory (52). The selectivity of the read operation depends on whether or not the RLC PDU to be retransmitted belongs to a data packet that has been completely transmitted in a single layer 1 transport unit.

A device embodiment (100) comprises a first network access module (102) having a first radio technology, or RAT, interface (114) and being clocked at a first clock frequency and a second network access module (104) having a second RAT interface (130) and being clocked at a second clock frequency, wherein the first clock frequency is different from the second clock frequency. A method implementation of this technique comprises the steps of generating a clock signal having the first clock frequency, outputting the clock signal for use as a first reference clock signal in the first network access module (102), converting the clock signal to the second clock frequency, and outputting the converted clock signal for is use a second reference clock signal in the second network access module (104).
