摘要： The invention is (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl acrylate, (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl methacrylate or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof.In another aspect, the invention is a polymeric composition which comprises the reaction product of:(a) between about 0.5 and 100 percent by weight of a (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl acrylate, (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl methacrylate or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof; and(b) between about 0 and 99.5 weight percent of a compound containing a polymerizable 1,2-ethylenically unsaturated moiety.

摘要： A novel composite membrane and methods of making the membrane are described. The discriminating layer of the membrane is prepared by reaction of a reactive cationic compound group with a compound bearing a nucleophilic moiety. At least one of the reactants bears an average of two or more reactive groups. The reaction product contains covalent bonds formed via charge eliminating reactions.In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the nucleophilic group is anionic and a coacervate is formed initially on a microporous substrate. The resulting membrane may be useful for reverse osmosis, gas or ultrafiltration separations.

摘要： New, highly reactive, polymerizable compounds are described, corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H or lower alkyl, Z is a linking entity which is a chemical bond, lower alkylene, lower alkylenedioxy, O or the like, m is an integer 2-3 and n is 0-10. They are prepared by reaction of the corresponding 3(methylthio)phenolic compounds with the appropriate 1,4- or 1,5-alkylene bromide and converting the resulting cyclic sulfonium bromide to the zwitterion by treatment with a strong base anion-exchange resin in hydroxide form. They polymerize in a few minutes at 30.degree.-50.degree. C. to form polymers useful as coatings.

摘要： Substantially permanent or removable coatings can be prepared from a composition comprising a polymer dissolved or dispersed in a multicomponent medium that contains water, a low-boiling polar organic solvent, and a high-boiling point solvent. The polymer is characterized by containing structural units formed from the polymerization of a polymerizable strong cationic monomer, a polymerizable acid monomer, and optionally a non-interfering monomer. The composition forms a dust-free and tack-free film that can be removed by a combination of water and an organic solvent. The film can also be made resistant to organic solvents as well as acids and bases with the addition of a crosslinking agent to the composition.

摘要： Described is a process for preparing a three-dimensional article of a lyotropic polymer comprising the steps of (a) forming a shaped article of a liquid crystalline solution of a lyotropic polymer; (b) washing the shaped article with a washing fluid under conditions sufficient to reduce the solvent content of the article to less than about 2,000 parts per million, wherein the dimensions of the washed article are no less than 0.05 inches by 0.05 inches by 0.05 inches. Such articles are useful for many applications, particularly those requiring fire- and/or heat-resistance.

A substrate can be coated with a first compound bearing a plurality of onium groups and a second compound bearing a plurality of nucleophilic groups. The resulting coating cures readily upon exposure to actinic radiation.
