Abstract:
Processes for converting a wide variety of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as polyalkylaromatics, into commercially useful para-substituted aromatics such as para-xylene are disclosed. The aromatic hydrocarbon feed stream is first partially converted into toluene which is then subjected to a highly para-selective methylation process. The present invention therefore provides novel processes and catalysts for increasing the para-selectivity in the selective production of para-substituted aromatic compounds. From the description provided herein, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the catalysts and processes of the present invention provide greater para-selectivity at conversion rates unattained by previously known methods.
Abstract:
Oligomers produced from lower olefins by acidic zeolite catalyzed oligomerization can be converted to useful lubricant additives or lubricants by epoxidation of olefinic bonds in the oligomers, whereby oligomers containing oxirane ring structures are produced. The epoxided products so produced exhibit high viscosity index and low pour points. The discovery is particularly applicable to the epoxidation of oligomers produced from lower olefins such as propylene by oligomerization using ZSM-5 catalyst which has been surface deactivated.

A modified ZSM-5 type zeolite is provided by treatment of a ZSM-5 type zeolite with BF.sub.3. The novel product is characterized by reduced pore size and enhanced shape-selectivity, or by enhanced activity, or by both. This invention also provides a process for catalytically converting organic compounds by use of the novel composition, an illustrative conversion being the catalytic conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons and C.sub.2 -C.sub.7 olefins to gasoline components.

The catalyst comprises a porous crystalline zeolite having silica deposited thereon and having incorporated therein phosphorous. A catalyst is provided, which is especially applicable for the selective production of certain desired hydrocarbons, comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12, a constraint index, as hereinafter defined, within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and having contained within the interior crystalline structure thereof added amorphous silica in an amount of at least about 0.1 and preferably between about 2 and about 10 weight percent. The invention described herein also encompasses synthesis of the specified catalyst and use of the same in selectively producing low molecular weight olefins and/or para-xylene from appropriate charge stocks.

Intercalation of a Lewis acid fluoride in graphite is effected in the presence of gaseous fluorine. The reaction results in new compositions useful as catalysts and as atmospheric pressure containers for normally gaseous Lewis acid fluorides.

There is provided a zeolite, such as ZSM-5, which is functionalized with at least one organosiliceous group of the formula, SiR.sub.n (OX).sub.4-n, where R is at least one hydrocarbyl group, n is 1 or 2 and X is Si or H. There is also provided a method for functionalizing a zeolite by treatment with a silicone compound, such as hexamethyldisiloxane, under vapor phase conditions. This contacting may take place in the presence of hydrogen and an organic carrier. The functionalized zeolites may provide a catalyst which is both highly active and highly selective for converting aromatic hydrocarbons, especially alkylbenzene compounds, to products comprising the para-isomer of dialkylbenzenes. The disproportionation of toluene is an example of such a reaction.
